SUMMARY:Kokomo City
DESCRIPTION:In the wildly entertaining and refreshingly unfiltered documentary KOKOMO CITY\, filmmaker D. Smith passes the mic to four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City –Daniella Carter\, Koko Da Doll\, Liyah Mitchell\, and Dominique Silver –whounapologetically break down the walls of their profession. Holding nothing back\, the film vibrates with energy\, sex\, challenge\, and hard-earned wisdom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis vital portrait\, edited and shot by Smith in bold black and white\, is her feature directorial debut. A two-time Grammy-nominated producer\, singer\, and songwriter\, Smith made history as the first trans woman cast on a primetime unscripted TV show. Executive produced by Lena Waithe\, KOKOMO CITY won the Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award\, as well as the Berlinale’s Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary section

SUMMARY:By Design
DESCRIPTION:Upon seeing a gorgeous chair in a showroom\, Camille (Juliette Lewis) realizes that she truly envies the life of this perfect piece of furniture. If only she could be someone’s favorite thing. When she and the chair swap forms\, Camille learns that she is better liked as an inanimate object than she was as a person: her mother (Betty Buckley) finds her to be a better listener\, and her best friends (Samantha Mathis and Robin Tunney) enjoy a newfound\, friction-free rapport. As the chair\, Camille is unable to speak or move and winds up in the hands of Olivier (Mamoudou Athie)\, a minimalist bachelor who gradually becomes romantically fixated on his elegant new possession. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNarrated by Melanie Griffith\, this modern fable celebrates the messiness of female interiority with deadpan humor\, surrealist flourishes\, and interpretative dance numbers. An absurdist spin on the body-swap comedy\, By Design is a bold new work from singular filmmaker Amanda Kramer.

SUMMARY:The Watermelon Woman
DESCRIPTION:The wry\, incisive debut feature by Cheryl Dunye gave cinema something bracingly new and groundbreaking: a vibrant representation of Black lesbian identity by a Black lesbian filmmaker. Dunye stars as Cheryl\, a video-store clerk and aspiring director whose interest in forgotten Black actresses leads her to investigate an obscure 1930s performer known as the Watermelon Woman\, whose story proves to have surprising resonances with Cheryl’s own life as she navigates a new relationship with a white girlfriend (Guinevere Turner). Balancing breezy romantic comedy with a serious inquiry into the history of Black and queer women in Hollywood\, The Watermelon Woman slyly rewrites long-standing constructions of race and sexuality on-screen\, introducing an important voice in American cinema.

SUMMARY:The Choral
DESCRIPTION:1916. As war rages on the Western Front\, the Choral Society in Ramsden\, Yorkshire has lost most of its men to the army. The Choral’s ambitious committee\, determined to press ahead\, decides to recruit local young males to swell their ranks. They must also engage a new chorus master\, and despite their suspicions that he has something to hide\, their best bet seems to be Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes) – driven\, uncompromising\, and recently returned from a career in Germany. As conscription papers start to arrive\, the whole community discovers that the best response to the chaos that is laying waste to their lives is to make music together.

A two-time Grammy-nominated producer\, singer\, and songwriter\, Smith made history as the first trans woman cast on a primetime unscripted TV show.
