SUMMARY:The Choral
DESCRIPTION:1916. As war rages on the Western Front\, the Choral Society in Ramsden\, Yorkshire has lost most of its men to the army. The Choral’s ambitious committee\, determined to press ahead\, decides to recruit local young males to swell their ranks. They must also engage a new chorus master\, and despite their suspicions that he has something to hide\, their best bet seems to be Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes) – driven\, uncompromising\, and recently returned from a career in Germany. As conscription papers start to arrive\, the whole community discovers that the best response to the chaos that is laying waste to their lives is to make music together.

SUMMARY:By Design
DESCRIPTION:Upon seeing a gorgeous chair in a showroom\, Camille (Juliette Lewis) realizes that she truly envies the life of this perfect piece of furniture. If only she could be someone’s favorite thing. When she and the chair swap forms\, Camille learns that she is better liked as an inanimate object than she was as a person: her mother (Betty Buckley) finds her to be a better listener\, and her best friends (Samantha Mathis and Robin Tunney) enjoy a newfound\, friction-free rapport. As the chair\, Camille is unable to speak or move and winds up in the hands of Olivier (Mamoudou Athie)\, a minimalist bachelor who gradually becomes romantically fixated on his elegant new possession. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNarrated by Melanie Griffith\, this modern fable celebrates the messiness of female interiority with deadpan humor\, surrealist flourishes\, and interpretative dance numbers. An absurdist spin on the body-swap comedy\, By Design is a bold new work from singular filmmaker Amanda Kramer.

SUMMARY:After Hours (1985)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Martin Scorsese – 1985 – 97m \n\n\nDesperate to escape his mind-numbing routine\, uptown Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) ventures downtown for a hookup with a mystery woman (Rosanna Arquette). So begins the wildest night of his life\, as bizarre occurrences—involving underground-art punks\, a distressed waitress\, a crazed Mister Softee truck driver\, and a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight—pile up with anxiety-inducing relentlessness and thwart his attempts to get home. With this Kafkaesque cult classic\, Martin Scorsese—abetted by Michael Ballhaus’s kinetic cinematography and scene-stealing supporting turns by Linda Fiorentino\, Teri Garr\, Catherine O’Hara\, and John Heard—directed a darkly comic tale of mistaken identity\, turning the desolate night world of 1980s SoHo into a bohemian wonderland of surreal menace. \n“I have spent 40 years in swoony thrall to this movie. I tremble every single time I watch it. After Hours is an object lesson in sonder.” – Walter Chaw\, Film Freak Central \n“Dazzling movie making; you could get a giddy kick just from cinematographer Michael Ballhaus’ shot as a set of house keys floats down toward the camera\, tossed from a top-floor apartment.” – Sheila Benson. SUMMARY:Alligator (1980)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Lewis Teague – 1980 – 94m \n\n\nIt lives 50 feet beneath the city. It’s 36 feet long. It weighs 2\,000 pounds…and it’s about to break out! From director Lewis Teague (Cujo) and screenwriter John Sayles (Lone Star\, The Howling) comes an unstoppable thriller with bite. A family returning from Florida decides their pet baby alligator is too much to handle and flushes him down the toilet. Now\, twelve years later\, after several mysterious murders\, David Madison (Robert Forster\, Jackie Brown) is on the case to find out who…or what…is killing people. \n“…let’s raise a glass to Alligator\, one of the most sublime B-pictures ever made; wit and wisdom make for great films\, and this adorable monster movie has all the bite you could hope for…” – Eddie Harrison\, film-authority.com \n“Absolute rollercoaster of a movie\, full of humour\, action\, explosions\, snappy (no pun intended) dialogue\, well-observed characters\, many cast members with extremely pleasing faces\, and one of the most enjoyably chaotic weddings…” – Chris Jackson\, Starburst

SUMMARY:The Watermelon Woman
DESCRIPTION:The wry\, incisive debut feature by Cheryl Dunye gave cinema something bracingly new and groundbreaking: a vibrant representation of Black lesbian identity by a Black lesbian filmmaker. Dunye stars as Cheryl\, a video-store clerk and aspiring director whose interest in forgotten Black actresses leads her to investigate an obscure 1930s performer known as the Watermelon Woman\, whose story proves to have surprising resonances with Cheryl’s own life as she navigates a new relationship with a white girlfriend (Guinevere Turner). Balancing breezy romantic comedy with a serious inquiry into the history of Black and queer women in Hollywood\, The Watermelon Woman slyly rewrites long-standing constructions of race and sexuality on-screen\, introducing an important voice in American cinema.
