SUMMARY:Experiments In Cinema V21.5
DESCRIPTION:20 years and going strong!  Artists films from around world! YEEAAHHHHHYYYUUUHHH!  A BASEMENT FILMS / EXPERIMENTS IN CINEMA event! \nCLICK HERE FOR FESTIVAL SCHEDULE \nMore info visit the EXPERIMENT IN CINEMA website! \nTickets can be purchased at the box office; no advance ticket sales. \n\nGeneral admission is $10 per day\nStudent and senior admission is $8 per day\nFull festival passes are $40\nFree admission for exhibiting artists and sponsors\n\nEach year\, Experiments In Cinema  brings the international community of cinematic un-dependents to Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, USA for a film festival that is designed to inspire a new generation of homegrown media activists to participate in shaping future trends of cultural representation. \n  \nIn many ways EIC likes to think of itself as a micro-community rather than a festival\, in that we are proudly and defiantly non-competitive—no pretentious red carpets\, arbitrary prizes or VIP passes at our event. Everyone who participates wins!. EIC is about sharing and nurturing\, as we truly believe that the community of media un-dependents are modern day traveling troubadours\, sharing their news of the day (from personal\, un-embedded perspectives) with colleagues and friends from around the world. \nExperiments in Cinema serves as a reminder that filmmaking has a responsibility that transcends the pathetically produced popcorn poo-poo that we have come to know as “going to the movies.” \nEIC believes in the meat-space of our event and that as useful as Youtube\, Vimeo and other interfaces are\, there is still nothing that replaces the emotional bandwidth (Gene Yougblood’s phrase) of face-to-face interactions amongst like-minded people inventing and imagining through the power of dialogue. \nEach year\, in addition to presenting a wide range of international screenings\, EIC also hosts live multi-media performances\, interactive projects\, lectures\, discussion groups\, hands-on workshops and a program of films produced by New Mexican Middle and High School students. \nOur annual celebration of all things un-dependently cinematic is produced by Basement Films. Basement Films is one of the few remaining first wave micro-cinemas left in the United States that has been supporting underrepresented forms of media since 1991.  – Basement Films President & Experiments In Cinema director\, Bryan Konefsky

SUMMARY:The Wraith (1986)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Mike Marvin – 1986 – 93m – Not Valid for Punch Cards \n\n\nA VideoH8 Special Presentation! \nCharlie Sheen\, Nick Cassavetes\, Sherilyn Fenn\, and Randy Quaid star in this turbocharged cult classic!  When four glowing orbs crash into each other over the Arizona desert\, they leave in their wake a badass Dodge Turbo Interceptor — and its enigmatic\, helmeted driver. The next day\, the mysterious Jake (Sheen) appears in the town of Brooks\, catching the eye of Keri (Fenn) and the ire of Packard (Cassavetes)\, the ruthless leader of a gang of street racers. When gang members start losing races — and lives — to the Interceptor\, the recent death of Keri’s boyfriend suddenly seems connected to the arrival of Jake\, the unbeatable car…and an avenging entity called THE WRAITH. \n“The kind of revenge B movie you can enjoy thanks to its eccentric tone and unique hero.” – Felix Vasquez Jr.\, Cinema Crazed \n“An enjoyably trashy sci-fi/car racing action movie.” – Chuck Rudolph\, Matinee Magazine \n“An imaginative\, thrilling piece.” – Caffeinated Clint\, Film Threat

DESCRIPTION:Dir. Tamar Lando – 2025 – 76m – Valid for Punch Cards \n\n\nSOME OF THE CAST & CREW AT SELECT SCREENINGS T.B.A.! \nIn a remote corner of Southwestern New Mexico\, the last cowboys eke out a fragile survival between industrial and protected lands. \nTheir herds diminished by an epic drought affecting large parts of the American West\, these veteran stewards of the land live in a shrinking world of isolation\, vulnerability\, and memories. \nA poetic story of intimacy with nature\, LAND WITH NO RIDER captures a wisdom rapidly disappearing from the American landscape. \n“Tamar Lando’s earthy feature debut ‘Land With No Rider’ is wholly grappling not with a mythological conclusion but a true endangerment of a way of life… Hard times and bitter losses do arrive in ‘Land With No Rider\,’ and Lando’s humanistic lens keeps these obstacles grounded within the cracks of these men’s hands and in the light of their eyes for a stirring ode to the last few acres of the West.” —RogerEbert.com \n“Poetic\, endearing\, and profound”—Alliance of Women Film Journalists \n“Authorial”… an “aesthetic statement”—Filmmaker Magazine \n“The film is filled with artistry and affection as it contains shots of vast\, barren landscapes in southwestern New Mexico and visual studies of old ranchers who have formed a deep connection with the land that provides for them….Lando successfully captured the ranchers’ stories as well as their relationship to the land with such intimacy.” —TheManeater.com

After Russia invades Ukraine\, Pasha’s role in the school changes dramatically as he is reluctantly drawn into Putin’s propaganda machine. Forced to promote state-sanctioned messages and horrified by the transformation of his school and community\, he struggles with guilt and a sense of powerlessness\, leading him to become an international whistleblower. \nAs the school’s videographer\, Pasha documents intimate and revealing footage of Putin’s regime\, capturing the rise of militarized children’s groups\, repressive laws\, fervent nationalism\, and the recruitment of graduating students to fight in the war. SUMMARY:The Adventures of Prince Achme (Live Score)
DESCRIPTION:Live score from performed by the Dovetail Orchestra. \nSeem like a hundred years flew right by…1926 was a vibrant year in early cinema\, and Lotte Reiniger\, a German filmmaker already known for her mastery of silhouettes in collaboration with Max Reinhardt\, had finally finished the jaw-dropping Adventures of Prince Achmed\, a film that would be widely known today as the oldest surviving animated feature film. Reiniger’s stunning\, hand-cut puppets and lighting techniques were groundbreaking\, along with her precise timing and mastery of early animation. Formed in 2018\, Dovetail Orchestra has performed hours of original music to carefully-curated silent film gems from the explosive first decades of early cinema and animation from all over the world. They have performed at SITE Santa Fe\, The Guild\, Motorama and now primarily at Jean Cocteau Cinema. Founder/Composer Ross Hamlin is also the composer for Zozobra and his own rotating Rhombus Ensemble. One half of the duo LALIAS\, he also plays bass in Dead Beatclub and Love Unfold the Sun. This performance will repeat the success of their Halloween show last fall: Hamlin and Andrew Primm both playing multiple instruments.

SUMMARY:Solomon King (1974)
DESCRIPTION:Dirs. Jack Bomay and Sal Watts – 1974 – 84m – Valid for Punch Cards \n\n\n“Don’t you suckers know the days of Uncle Remus and Old Black Joe are gone?\,” barks ex-CIA operative/ex-Green Beret/nightclub owner Solomon King to a group of Black gang members at the Sugar Hill Club\, in actor/director/writer Sal Watts’s long-lost Black urban crime/action film. SOLOMON KING was shot independently in Oakland\, CA in 1973 with a cast of mostly non-professional Black actors\, a killer soul-funk soundtrack and incredible clothes from Watts’s own Mr. Sal’s Fashion stores. In the vein of SHAFT meets THE LIQUIDATOR (with slo-mo kung fu fight scenes straight out of the Dirk Diggler movies in BOOGIE NIGHTS)\, the film stars Watts as an African American version of James Bond/Matt Helm\, seducing beautiful nightclub singers and beating the crap out of the henchmen of an oil-obsessed Middle Eastern ruler. Produced on a shoestring budget and shot on location in many of the businesses Watts owned\, the film is a priceless document of early Seventies Black culture\, music and fashion in Oakland – and a powerful metaphor for Black empowerment\, with Solomon turning the tables on every duplicitous white character he encounters. “You can’t do a damn thing without the motherf**in’ white man calling the shots\,” he observes at one point. Watts’s personal story is even more fascinating: emerging from grinding poverty and racism in Mississippi\, he went on to become a filmmaker and actor\, record label owner\, host of TV dance program “Soul Is\,” fashion store owner and restaurateur in the 1970s\, before serving time in federal prison on tax charges and dying in 2003. Restored with the cooperation of his widow Belinda Burton-Watts (who appears in the film)\, utilizing one of the only surviving complete prints of the film from UCLA Film & TV Archive and the original soundtrack elements\, SOLOMON KING like Rudy Ray Moore’s DOLEMITE (1975) is both a wildly entertaining\, funk-fueled action/fantasy – and a prime example of an independent Black filmmaker trying to break into the commercial film market his own way. \n“Watching Solomon King is akin to watching a Rudy Ray Moore film that was lost to time and is only now bursting onto the scene some 50 years later.” – Ed Travis\, Cinapse

SUMMARY:The Long Riders (1980)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Walter Hill – 1980 – 100m \n\n\nOUR ARTHOUSE CLASSICS GOES WESTERN! \nFrom the great Walter Hill (THE WARRIORS\, 48 HOURS) with a fantastic Ry Cooder soundtrack – Jesse James and his gang of outlaws ride again in this extraordinary western that pulsates with hard-driving action and electrifying drama. Four sets of actor brothers – David Carradine\, Keith Carradine and Robert Carradine; James Keach and Stacy Keach; Randy Quaid and Dennis Quaid; Christopher Guest and Nicholas Guest – each depict real-life siblings in this emotionally charged portrayal of the Old West’s legendary bandits. The notorious James-Younger gang is the most famous group of outlaws in the country\, robbing banks\, trains and stagecoaches with a sense of daring that makes them folk heroes throughout the land. But when the mighty Pinkerton detective agency swears to track them down\, these criminals must face an awesome enemy that will stop at nothing to see them behind bars…or dead! Only through the strength of their loyalty and blood ties can the outlaws hope to survive the brutal pursuits\, unexpected betrayals and blistering showdowns that mark the end of their dangerous ride. \n“A Western Nirvana” – Fernando F. Croce\, CinePassion \n“A beautiful\, laconic and unsentimental film.” – Geoff Andrew\, Time Out \n“Hill is very much in the American grain\, the inheritor of the Ford-Hawks-Walsh tradition of artful\, understated action film making.” – Richard Schickel\, TIME Magazine

SUMMARY:John Lilly And The Earth Coincidence Control Office
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Michael Almareyda and Courtney Stephens – 2026 – 89m \n\n\nThe daring experimenter Dr. John C. Lilly dedicated his life to radical self-investigation and unlocking the mysteries of consciousness and communication. “My body is my laboratory” was the motto\, and his research on the language of dolphins and whales – as well as psychedelics and sensory deprivation – assured his own cult status in 20th-century pop culture as the basis for Ken Russel’s ALTERED STATES and Mike Nichols’s THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN.  Directors Michael Almareyda and Courtney Stephens\, along with narrator Chloë Sevigny\, explore the life of a determined scientist and his experiments into the psychonautical unknown. \n“An illuminating work of cultural archaeology … Earth Coincidence paints Lilly as a 20th-century polymath\, a one-of-a-kind maverick.”—THE FILM STAGE

SUMMARY:Mr. Nobody Against Putin
DESCRIPTION:Dir. David Borenstein & Pavel Talankin – 2025 – 90m – Denmark\, Czechia\, Germany – In Russian w/English subtitles – Valid for Punch Cards \n\n\nPasha Talankin is an unlikely hero—a beloved Russian primary school teacher\, known as a mentor and prankster who offers students a safe haven in his office. When he learns his own life may be at risk\, Pasha is forced to plan a dangerous escape from Russia. \nDirected by David Borenstein and co-directed by Pasha Talankin\, this uniquely collaborative film is as captivating and joyful as it is eye-opening and sobering. Mr. Nobody Against Putin showcases rare footage that reveals the profound impact of Putin’s regime on the lives of everyday Russians\, particularly its children. \n“An endearing\, infuriating\, and despairing non-fiction portrait of a country’s final descent into oppressive authoritarianism\, all of it shot covertly by one brave teacher\, it’s a striking work of rebel cinema.” – The Daily Beast \n“Through the eyes of its delightfully brave\, yet utterly relatable subject (also the de facto cinematographer)\, this terrifying\, revelatory and poignant exposé offers an unseen human angle on an ongoing conflict.” – Variety \n“Remarkable… An exemplary work of cinematic modernism.” – Richard Brody\, The New Yorker \n“Quietly revelatory.” – Matt Zoller Seitz\, RogerEbert.com \n“Nothing short of an act of rebellion.” – Nick Schager\, The Daily Beast \n“Delightfully brave\, yet utterly relatable… Offers an unseen human angle on an ongoing conflict.” – Carlos Aguilar\, Variety \n“In the wave of documentaries about the Ukraine War that have come out over the past two years\, there hasn’t been one that’s offered what Mr. Nobody Against Putin does — and certainly not with such wit\, verve\, and insight.” – Christian Blauvelt\, Indiewire
