Other recordings are on the Naxos\, Telarc and Koch labels\, with a concert DVD published by Mel Bay. David Leisner’s recent seasons have taken him around the US\, Canada\, Mexico\, Europe and Australasia. A frequent performer of chamber music\, he has performed at some of the major festivals around the country and was the Artistic Director of Guitar Plus\, an innovative New York series devoted to chamber music with the guitar. His own compositions\, noted for their emotional and dramatic power\, are performed\, recorded and published worldwide. One of his most recent commissions was the guitar concerto\, Wayfaring\, written for Pepe Romero\, who will record it later this year. Leisner is the Chair of the guitar department at the Manhattan School of Music. He is also author of the book\, Playing with Ease\, published by Oxford University Press.

DESCRIPTION:A captivating sound & sight night of projected map manipulations by the touring San Francisco-based expanded cinema artist Eric Theise plus an improv set with local audio alchemist Kenneth Cornell and bassist/saxophonist Clifford Grindstaff!  Fans of experimental film and music as well as geo/cartographers\, open data/source enthusiasts\, and just people who like maps won’t want to miss this special evening! \nEric’s tour shows include real time cartographic improvisations using projected\, manipulated digital maps\, in collaboration with local musicians. A visual wash of street grids\, land masses\, water bodies\, and curiosities from built and natural environments. Orphaned labels and free-floating symbology. Auditory roundabouts. Saturated colors and the subtlest of tints. Acoustic cul-de-sacs. Jittery zooms\, pans\, and traversals. Glitches in crowdsourced data.  Theise manipulates projected digital maps in performance with musicians and other time-based artists under the banner A Synesthete’s Atlas–since its 2022 Lisbon premiere it’s been performed in nearly fifty North American and European cities. Theise’s collaboration with composer Shahrzad Talebi was premiered at the end of March by line upon line percussion ensemble as part of CAST’s (Contemporary Art & Sound Technologies) inaugural season at dadaLab in Austin\, Texas\, and he comes to Albuquerque as part of a follow-on tour through Arizona\, New Mexico\, and Colorado. \nKenneth Cornell is a sound artist\, improviser\, and musician from Albuquerque\, New Mexico. He has worked with electronics\, synthesis\, and various instruments over 3 decades now. His performances and installations have been in many independent venues\, concert halls\, night clubs\, galleries and museums across the U.S. and Ireland. \nClifford Grindstaff plays saxophone and bass clarinet with treatments among other instruments.

He is a member of JACK Quartet\, called “the nation’s most important quartet” by the New York Times and has been praised as a “gifted\, adventuresome violinist” by the Chicago Tribune. Through in-depth collaboration with performers and composers working in a panoply of aesthetic realms\, Austin searches daily for the violin’s voice in today’s musical world. \nAustin’s debut album as composer\, The News From Utopia was released in 2023\, which Austin wrote\, recorded and mixed. His second record\, Escape Rites\, was released with JACK Quartet in 2025. His works have been performed in concert with pianist Conrad Tao at Miller Theater\, by guitarist Alec Goldfarb at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse and Brooklyn’s Roulette Intermedium\, and frequently by JACK Quartet. With JACK\, his works have been performed at such venues as Cal Performances\, Carnegie Hall Summer Stage\, Lincoln Center\, Melbourne Recital Centre\, Musikkollegium Winterthur\, Pierre Boulez Saal\, and Wigmore Hall. \nAs an interpreter\, Austin has played in such renowned venues as the Berlin Philharmonie\, the Elbphilharmonie\, Carnegie Hall\, and the Wiener Konzerthaus\, and featured on such festivals as Tanglewood\, Ojai\, Spoleto\, and Lucerne. Work with JACK has included premieres by John Luther Adams\, Chaya Czernowin\, Philip Glass\, Georg Friedrich Haas\, Clara Iannotta\, George Lewis\, Tyshawn Sorey and John Zorn\, as well as collaborating with the likes of Barbara Hannigan\, Patricia Kopatchinskaja\, Helmut Lachenmann\, Igor Levit\, Julia Wolfe\, and leading a chamber orchestra of members of the Berlin Philharmonic.  He has received awards from Musical America (“2019 Ensemble of the Year” JACK Quartet)\, Chamber Music America’s Michael Jaffee Visionary Award in 2024\, and was presented with Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2018.

DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, Jay Beckenstein and Spyro Gyra observed the 50th anniversary of what started as a diversion\, something that was just for fun (and twenty-five cents at the door). It’s a time that Beckenstein remembers fondly. He describes the beginning as “that period of time when I was in my 20s\, when it was all raw and there were no expectations. It was all about having a good time and playing hard. It was a golden time.” \nIt’s a story that is familiar to fans of Spyro Gyra the world around. It began inauspiciously in 1974 when Jay Beckenstein and a few musician friends in Buffalo\, NY organized a get together on their shared night off from working in bands that actually made money. It was a simple\, humble idea with a name that was likewise simple and humble\, “Tuesday Night – Jazz Jam.” Every week a core group\, Beckenstein and co-founder Jeremy Wall along with Jim Kurzdorfer and Tom Walsh\, the rhythm section from the Buffalo Jazz Ensemble who Beckenstein and Wall had been playing with\, would gather to jam. They were joined by various players from around town\, including keyboardist Tom Schuman\, who just wanted to have some fun playing jazz and its relatively new cousin\, jazz fusion. \nThe idea grew\, and so did its audience until one week when the club owner insisted that Beckenstein comes up with a name for the group to display on his new sidewalk sign. Beckenstein flippantly suggested “spirogyra\,” which is an algae he remembered from his biology classes. The next week\, there it was adorning the sign out front mistakenly spelled Spyro Gyra. And so it began and continued to grow.
