SUMMARY:Kitchen Dwellers
DESCRIPTION:In Dante’s Inferno\, the author grapples with sin\, its various manifestations\, and its consequences. This time ultimately traces a trajectory of self-realization\, acceptance\, and accountability. Kitchen Dwellers embark on a similar odyssey over the course of their fourth full-length offering\, Seven Devils. The Montana quartet—Shawn Swain [Mandolin]\, Torrin Daniels [Banjo]\, Joe Funk [Upright Bass]\, and Max Davies [Acoustic Guitar]—thread together an immersive and inimitable conceptual arc inspired by Dante’s Inferno and set to a soundtrack of folk-infused bluegrass spiked with psychedelic vision and rock energy. \nContinuing their own journey as brothers\, they deliver their most ambitious and anthemic body of work yet. \n“These tunes deal with the human experience\, and Torrin initially drew a parallel between the music and Dante\,” Max states. “We explored the connection by correlating each song with a sin. Some of these connections are only apparent if you dive deep into the lyrics. Our goal is to essentially take the listener through our own interpretation of the Inferno story.” \n“We didn’t go into the studio with the intent of making a concept album\,” recalls Torrin. “I was driving around listening to everything\, and I noticed these parallels. To dive deeper\, we’re discussing topics like mental health\, the human condition\, and what we go through on the road. In life and music\, everything is recurring and universal. I was reading Dante at the time\, and it naturally fit.” \nIt proved to be a logical next step as well… \nThus far\, Kitchen Dwellers have engaged and enraptured listeners with albums such as Ghost In The Bottle [2017]\, Muir Maid [2019]\, Live from the Wilma [2021]\, and Wise River [2022]. Of the latter\, Holler. praised how “Kitchen Dwellers have preserved their sense of youthful experimentation\,” and Relix proclaimed\, “The songs on the new record build on this range\, while also reflecting on the group’s Bozeman\, Montana home.” Between tallying millions of streams\, the band ignited hallowed venues such as Red Rocks Amphitheatre and graced the bills of Telluride Bluegrass\, Northwest String Summit\,\nWinterWonderGrass\, and beyond. \nIn order to bring Seven Devils to life\, the musicians opted to work with producer Glenn Brown. It would not only mark their first time collaborating with the producer\, but it also would be the first time they decamped to Michigan in order to record. \n“The studio itself definitely impacted the vibe\,” Torrin notes. “It’s a tiny workspace\, but it’s full of old recording equipment with legendary stories attached to it. For almost the entire time\, we were forced to congregate in this room together. The process was ever-evolving\, because ideas kept flowing.” \nFittingly\, “Seven Devils (Limbo)” opens the album and serves as the first single. Nimbly picked banjo and upbeat acoustic guitar set the pace as the regretful chorus bemoans\, “Am I supposed to hop the next train? Or stand here drowning in the Oregon rain?” A guitar-driven bridge dips in and out of effects-laden echoes and stark strumming. Coming full circle\, a ten-minute version of “Seven Devils” later bookends the record with an epic finale. \n“I incorporated some elements of grunge in terms of the chords\, which are a little dissonant\,” Torrin elaborates. “Thematically\, it’s the descent into Hell. First\, Dante goes through limbo before reaching any of the circles where the cardinal sins are addressed. ‘Seven Devils’ evokes the feeling of being in limbo.” \n“It also signifies you’re embarking on some type of journey\,” Max agrees. “By the end of the LP\, you know the protagonist isn’t going to be the same person.” \nThen\, there’s “The Crow and The Raven (III).” The track’s emotionally charged vocals seesaw on top of strings in a moment of terse reflection. “I went through a horrible breakup in 2018 when I wrote the first version\,” Shawn remembers. “‘The Crow and The Raven (III)’ sat in my notebook for a half-decade before we revamped it. Now\, it’s a sad\, slower lament about enduring the loss of a relationship.” \n“Pendulum” rushes towards a mournful refrain offset by a plucky crescendo. “It’s about dealing with an addiction in your life and how it affects relationships\,” Joe says. “People often trade one addiction for another\, whether positive or detrimental to their life\, as a means to satisfy their baseline addictive tendencies.” \nOn the other end of the spectrum\, “Here We Go (VI)” laments the epidemic of shootings in America with unfiltered frustration projected through a powerful ebb and flow punctuated by a cameo from Lindsay Lou. \n“I was riding a Greyhound from Seattle to Missoula in 2012\,” Max goes on. “There had just been another school shooting. It’s terrible to think of how many shootings have happened since. Why is this happening? The chorus shifts gears to miscommunication between two parties in a relationship. Those are the two driving forces.” \nAn electric guitar lead heralds the onset of “Unwind (Paradiso)\,” building towards one climactic moment of catharsis. \n“A psychedelic experience and life-changing ego death changed my outlook on many things\,” Torrin admits. “‘Unwind (Paradiso)’ was one of those moments where you surrender and let it take you. You’re letting go of the human things in your brain that make you want to fight or cause you to be afraid. It also came together in the studio as a band\, which was super cool.” \nIn the end\, Kitchen Dwellers may just leave you changed with Seven Devils. \n“The record is a trip inward within the self\,” Torrin concludes. “It tackles a lot of things in the world people try not to think about. The reality is we’re only truly happy when happiness comes from within. That’s the message.”

SUMMARY:David Ramirez
DESCRIPTION:David Ramirez took a little time to get back to himself\, and now he’s dead set on making music for himself—for the sake of the music\, and nothing else. \n“I love all the records I’ve made in the past\,” says Ramirez. “But in making them\, there was always the thought in the back of my mind of where and what it could get me. I made both creative and business decisions with a goal in mind; a goal that often never came. This time it was all about just the joy of making it\, about having fun with it.” \nThe Austin\, TX-based singer-songwriter—whose career has seen six full-length studio albums\, three EPs\, countless collaborations\, and an illustrious supergroup project in Glorietta—spent a season of rest away from his focus on writing songs. In the wake of the end of a long relationship\, he wanted to prioritize processing his grief as a human\, not as an artist bleeding onto the page. \n“The last thing I wanted was to write a heartbreak record. So I stopped writing altogether\, and I just waited until I saw my heart start coming back to life. I wanted the next thing to be hopeful and sweet and beautiful—a testament to music and my love for it.” \nRamirez’s new record\, All the Not So Gentle Reminders\, is exactly what he was waiting for. The 12-song album is an expansive succession of dreamlike songs that indeed tell his stories—but more than anything\, lean into the possibilities of the trip that music can take us on. “I’ve been a songwriter for a long time. I love words and stories. But this was about music. I wanted the long musical intros and outros [as heard on “Dirty Martini\,” “Twin Sized Beds\,” “A Bigger World\,” and “Dreams Come True”] to contribute to the stories and be a part of them.” \nThe lead track\, “Maybe It Was All a Dream\,” sets this theme of the ethereal and dreamy from the outset. It’s a three-and-a-half-minute musical tour de force—at first\, a simple synth line over a subdued drum machine\, that eventually morphs into a grandiose rollick of organ\, drum rolls\, and electric guitars. All the while\, staticky\, broken voices repeat the almost-haunting coda that gives the record its name. In the end\, this “dream” is interrupted and punctuated by a recording of Ramirez’s own mother saying\, “David… David… it’s time to get up.” \nIn “Deja Voodoo\,” Ramirez questions his own memory\, wondering if he remembers his life as it really was\, or if even the past itself is a dream colored by time and distance. He sings\, “Maybe it was in another life. Maybe it was just a dream. Was it a memory passed down from another? A cosmic sunflare? Or just deja vu?” It’s easy to wonder whether the not-so-gentle reminders are themselves facts\, or just figments of our imagination— something to be trusted or something to move on from and reclaim our lives. \nThe songs for the album were written during a writing getaway David went on for two weeks\, where he holed up at Standard Deluxe—a music venue and art space in the tiny 100-person town of Waverly\, Alabama. His goal was to get out of the noise of Austin for a while\, to be alone\, to get back to writing with the “uninterrupted silence [he had] been missing.” \nAll the Not So Gentle Reminders was recorded at Spectra Studios in Cedar Park\, TX just outside of Austin\, engineered by Charlie Kramsky at the helm. He tapped local staples as the house musicians for the sessions\, including Barbara Frigiere\, Jeff Olson\, James Westley Essary\, and Christopher Boosahda (who also helped to produce the album alongside Ramirez). And in the spirit of the exuberance and joy of the recording\, he also called upon a handful of friends to contribute and sing background vocals throughout the album. \n“It made sense to bring in this group as we were so tight musically and relationally from touring together the last few years. Like all my albums before this I never want to repeat what I’ve previously made. This was no exception. I brought in Boosahda to co-produce because I had never tried my hand at the captain’s wheel\, and I wanted someone experienced and with a different musical background than me to bring some extra shine.” \nThroughout the album\, David tackles memory and dreams\, fleeting romance\, the possibility of something better ahead\, and his own deep appreciation for music and his place in making it. The fact that he considered giving it up altogether—a decision he thankfully didn’t follow through with—All the Not So Gentle Reminders only serves to be that much more impactful as a testament to music and its power. \nMost pointedly in “Music Man\,” he recalls his own turning point as a boy\, listening on a Walkman his father gave him… a fateful turn that led him to where he is today. “So take a look at me now. I’m quite the music man. Take a look at the crowd. We’re all here for the music\, man. It’s the music\, man.” On what is his most ambitious\, lush\, and exuberant record to date\, David is leaning in full-hearted to who he knows he is at his core—and not letting anything else stand in his way. \n“I will always be me. I’ve seen enough of the business to know that chasing its praises will only land me in a world of disappointment and self-doubt. I’m wholly back in my chi and\, fingers crossed\, have the strength to stay.”

SUMMARY:Cedric Burnside
DESCRIPTION:The official credit tells it like it is. “Recorded in an old building in Ripley\, Mississippi” – that’s all the info we get\, and all that we need. \nWhen Cedric Burnside prepared to record Hill Country Love\, the follow-up to his 2021 Grammy-winning album I Be Trying\, he set up shop in a former legal office located in a row of structures in the seat of Tippah County\, a town with 5\,000 residents that’s known as the birthplace of the Hill Country Blues style. \n“That building was actually going to be my juke joint. Everything was made out of wood\, which made the sound resonate like a big wooden box\,” said Burnside. He called up producer Luther Dickinson (co-founder of the acclaimed North Mississippi Allstars and the son of legendary Memphis producer/musician Jim Dickinson)\, who brought recording equipment into the empty space. “We recorded in the middle of a bunch of rubbish – wood everywhere and garbage cans\,” Burnside says. “We just laid everything out the way and recorded the album right there.” \nThe 14 songs on the record were finished in two days\, but in addition to being satisfied with the sound\, Burnside believes that Hill Country Love represents real creative progress. “Every time I write an album\, it’s always different\,” he says. “I’m always looking to express myself a little bit better than I did on the last one and talk about more things happen in my life. I think that every day that you’re able to open your eyes\, life is gonna throw you something to write about and to talk about. \n“So on this album\,” he continues\, “I’m a little bit more upfront and direct\, because I went through some crazy feelings with family and with friends. Winning the Grammy was awesome\, but people tend to treat you a little different when things like that happen.” \nCertainly\, plenty of things have happened in Cedric Burnside’s life since he went on the road at age 13\, drumming for his grandfather\, the pioneering bluesman R.L. Burnside. His two albums before I Be Trying – 2015’s Descendants of Hill Country and 2018’s Benton County Relic – were both nominated for Grammys. He has also appeared in several films\, including Tempted and Big Bad Love (both released in 2001) and the 2006 hit Black Snake Moan\, and he played the title character in 2021’s Texas Red. \nBurnside is a recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship\, the country’s highest honor in the folk and traditional arts and was recently recognized with the 2024 Mississippi Governor’s Art Award for Excellence in Music. He has performed and recorded with such diverse musicians as Jimmy Buffett\, Bobby Rush\, and Widespread Panic. \nYet as the title of the new album indicates\, Burnside has never strayed far from the distinctive blues style introduced to the world by his “Big Daddy” R.L. and such other greats as Junior Kimbrough\, Jessie Mae Hemphill\, and Otha Turner. “I’ve been traveling my whole life\, and the song ‘Hill Country Love’ gave me a chance to let people know that I love what I do and give a sense of how we do it in Mississippi – like\, the house party is a tradition here\, Big Daddy threw a lot of them. So that’s what I was thinking about as I was writing that song – where I come from and also where I’m going\, and how my journey has been to get to where I’m at now.” \nAnother song\, “Juke Joint\,” pays tribute to the local nightlife institutions that were central to Burnside’s growth both personally and musically. “The juke joint was a big part of my life\,” he says. “I didn’t go to church\, the juke joint was my church\, and the juke joint was my school. I was there all the time\, from 10 years old until I was grown.” \nAt the same time\, Burnside sees himself as an inheritor\, not an imitator\, of his native region’s blues style. “Big Daddy’s music\, Junior’s music\, Mister Otha’s music – my music is similar to theirs\, but I’m a younger generation\,” he says. “Whether we want to or not\, we move on\, and so my music will automatically sound a little more modern. But even if I tried to sound really modern\, that old feel and old sound is just there. You might hear a song and think. ‘Wow\, that sounds like it was recorded in 1959.’ I like that\, but it’s really just me growing up around it and falling in love with that sound.” \nThe album displays rock\, R&B\, and hip-hop elements\, a range of sounds and emotions\, from the self-explanatory instrumental “Get Funky” to the harsh truths of “Toll on your Life” and “Coming Real to You.” The most familiar composition is Burnside’s version of Mississippi Fred McDowell’s “You Gotta Move\,” popularized by the Rolling Stones but often performed by Burnside’s grandfather at his Holly Springs farm. “He would get off the tractor and go sit on the porch and play for a couple hours\, drink a little moonshine\, and then go back to the tractor\,” says Burnside\, “and that’s one of the songs that I always loved to hear him play.” \nMany have drawn parallels between the polyrhythmic\, droning sound of the Hill Country style\, with its unpredictable chord progressions and bar counts\, to West African music; that link is most obvious on the extended guitar introduction to “Love You Music.” But Burnside never really heard music from that part of the world until a few years ago\, when a friend born in Gambia played him a record by Malian artist Ali Farka Toure. “I thought it was some old\, underground Junior Kimbrough\,” he says. “I was like\, ‘Wow\, man\, I wonder do the Kimbrough family know about this?’ And then he started singing and my friend just started laughing!” \nWith “Closer\,” Burnside strives for spiritual redemption; “I fall short on you\, Lord\, on some days/Please forgive me Lord\, every day I pray\,” he sings. “That song really resonates to me\,” he says. “When I was writing it\, I didn’t just think about myself\, I thought about everybody in the world\, and getting closer to God. Every day you wake up\, life is challenging\, and it throws you all kinds of curveballs. Your faith is tested every day – that line is actually in the song\, and I know people can relate to that as I can.” \nTo Cedric Burnside\, Hill Country Love is a culmination of a career that’s already seen astonishing accomplishments and only keeps growing. What he wanted this time out was a real sense of honesty and integrity. “I compromised a little bit with my albums in the past\,” he says\, “and I didn’t really have to compromise with this one\, because I did it by myself. I paid for the engineer\, paid for the musicians\, I didn’t have a record company there. We just went to play music\, and how it came out was how it came out – and it came out great. \n“I have to be true to where I’m coming from\,” he continues. “On this album\, the feeling that I had was like\, I’m going to write what I feel\, I’m going to write what’s going on. Life gives you good and life gives you bad and you have to cope with it however you need to cope with it. My way of coping with things is through my music\, so I thank the Lord for music. I really do.”

SUMMARY:Levi Platero
DESCRIPTION:Steeped in musical lessons as far back as teaching himself guitar at nine years old from a launchpad of the three Kings and Stevie Ray Vaughn\, Levi Platero’s leads and songwriting reflect a lifetime absorbing music. Platero is from the Navajo Nation in the Southwest. His family band\, The Plateros\, emerged on the music scene in 2004 as a blues rock power trio compared to the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan\, Los Lonely Boys and ZZ Top. After a decade of touring the US with his family band\, and a one-year run as a member of Indigenous\, Levi decided it was time to get back to his own music as a solo artist.

SUMMARY:Ladysmith Black Mambazo
DESCRIPTION:For over 60 years\, South Africa’s five-time Grammy Award winners\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo has warmed the hearts of audiences worldwide with uplifting vocal harmonies\, signature dance moves and charming onstage banter. It was Paul Simon’s 1987 Graceland album that introduced Ladysmith Black Mambazo to the world. The late former South African President Nelson Mandela designated the group “South Africa’s cultural ambassadors to the world\,” a title the members carry with them with the highest honor. In 2018 the group received not one but two Grammy Award nominations for two separate albums\, a first in the history of World Music.
