SUMMARY:Vanessa Collier
DESCRIPTION:Recorded on analog gear with the musicians largely in one room\, singer/songwriter Vanessa Collier’s sixth album Do It My Own Way is sonically inspired by the classic Memphis soul sound of Stax and Hi Records\, especially that of the Staples Singers. Second single “Wild As a Rainstorm\,” which dives deep into soul territory\, powerfully gives advice to women and people who feel left out to ignore the naysayers and “Be a tapestry of dreams.”

SUMMARY:Esther Rose
DESCRIPTION:Esther Rose was on a long solo drive when she started writing the opening title track of Want\, her stunning fifth album. At first\, the words seemed almost like a joke\, something to keep herself amused as the miles passed. “I want a puppy\, but I don’t want a mess. I want to know where I’m going without GPS\,” she sang from behind the wheel. Soon\, the idea snowballed into a list of desires that spanned existential\, spiritual\, and mundane; romantic to platonic to familial; at once wildly ambitious yet piercingly relatable; all set to a catchy melody that blends her pop instincts with country storytelling and the raw immediacy of a basement punk show. In other words\, she was on her way to another classic Esther Rose song. \nThis precise blend has made the Santa Fe-based artist one of her generation’s most beloved songwriters: someone whose live shows are known to conclude in mass tears and group hugs. Still\, something was different this time. “For me\, these songs felt like revelations\,” she explains\, comparing the 11-song record to a memoir\, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. In its newly direct and stirringly nuanced writing\, you’ll hear about rock bottom encounters\, shifting relationships with substances\, evolving perspectives on adult partnership\, and\, as evidenced by those early lines in “Want\,” a few jokes along the way. Vivid and bracing\, Want places you in the passenger seat while each of these feelings arrive. \nTo match the multi-dimensional tone of the writing\, Rose has made the most adventurous\, hardest-hitting record of her career. Working with producer Ross Farbe and recording live-to-tape in Nashville’s Bomb Shelter\, she travels as far as she’s been from the stripped-down classic country of celebrated early work like 2017’s This Time Last Night and 2019’s You Made It This Far. Following the wide-open serenity of 2023’s momentous Safe to Run\, she now leans toward confrontational arrangements full of distortion and full-band spontaneity\, never sacrificing a classicist’s gift for melody that makes each song instantly memorable. \n“Making this album was the most beautiful experience of my life\,” Rose explains\, describing the euphoria of sharing these intimate stories among trusted collaborators like guitarist Kunal Prakash\, drummer Howe Pearson\, bassist Gina Leslie\, and pedal steel player John James Tourville. She also enlisted friends like singer-songwriter Dean Johnson (who duets in the stunning “Scars”) and New Orleans rock band Video Age (who she co-wrote “tailspin” with) to flesh out her vision. Ranging from stark solo performances to grungy blowouts\, the album maintains a steady focus while never staying too long in one place. (Like David Bowie\, Rose would arrive at the studio in carefully chosen outfits to set the tone for each session\, guiding her bandmates to follow the mood.) \nTo reach this level of confidence\, Rose had to recalibrate her entire relationship with music. When she concluded the tour for Safe to Run\, she considered quitting altogether\, feeling exhausted and depleted\, seeing no way to continue at her relentless pace. But after quitting drinking and finding new momentum in therapy\, she devoted herself to the new material\, letting ideas flow without worrying about the final product. She considered making an electro-pop album; a self-titled acoustic record. Eventually\, she began categorizing her disparate ideas under the working title The Therapy LP. \n“There are things that I have tiptoed around in my writing—and in my life—that I wasn’t ready to look at\,” she reflects\, “and now I’m going for it.” The results are breakthroughs like “Had To” and “Rescue You” that tether her tightly structured melodies to narratives that bring distressing subject matter down to earth. And where her love songs in the past often found universal resonance in simple questions about heartbreak\, these ones explore complex subjects like accountability and true connection: “Baby\, I’ve got scars that you cannot see/Love them for what they gave to me\,” she sings boldly in “Scars.” \nThis level of vulnerability is new from Esther Rose—a vow to be known more fully by her audience\, herself\, and the people in her life. “Each time I write a new album\, I go a little deeper\,” she says. “For me\, it’s been very challenging to stay… I’m always packing the Subaru in my mind.” And while she can still craft a road song like nobody else—“Two days on the highway\, solo drive/Today is the greatest day of my life\,” she sings in “tailspin”—she now searches for stability\, even when that means confronting internal chaos. The album’s closing song\, titled “Want Pt. 2\,” returns Rose to her old hometown of New Orleans during Mardi Gras\, watching a Rolling Stones cover band in a bar she frequented back in the day. She’s teary-eyed\, surrounded by loved ones\, finding new profundity in a shaky rendition of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” As she reflects on the scene—even interpolating some of the Stones’ lyrics and melodic cues—her friends provide celebratory backing vocals as the band thrashes away. It’s a fitting finale for the strongest\, widest-reaching album of her career—a moment when the past\, present\, and future collide\, a panorama of emotions\, the kind of party you never want to leave.

SUMMARY:Goodnight\, Texas
DESCRIPTION:Goodnight\, Texas is a band you’ve almost certainly heard by accident somewhere. And now on second look\, you’re deep in their catalog and they’re telling you stories about trapped coal miners and lovebird bank robbers. Banjos and mandolins twinkle. Now you’re seeing Avi Vinocur and Patrick Dyer Wolf and their band live and they’re swelling to a fever pitch\, suddenly singing quiet harmonies off-mic\, and then rocking out again. You’re talking to them at the merch table for a good while and you’re legitimately excited about their new album Signals because\, more than ever before\, it captures the vast dynamic range of the show and blends it with their expansive and intricate songwriting.

SUMMARY:West 22nd
DESCRIPTION:West 22nd is a rock band out of Austin\, TX\, made up of friends who met at UT Austin and came together with one shared goal: to make music for the world and become the next great rock band. \nTheir sound—self-described as carousel rock—spins through genre\, emotion\, and energy without ever losing its center. It’s a term they coined to capture the controlled chaos of their music: sometimes dizzying\, sometimes grounding\, always unforgettable. \nFrom a breakout EP to a debut album that pulled in over 1.5 million streams in its first month\, West 22nd has made it clear they’re not here to blend in. Their lyrics are autobiographical\, their shows are electric\, and their ambition’s impossible to miss. They’ve already played ACL\, sold out venues in cities they’d never even been to\, and built a fanbase that screams every word right back at them. \nWest 22nd isn’t a throwback or a trend—they’re what’s next. And if you’ve ever been in a crowd when the chorus hits just right\, you already know. \nFor the latest updates\, upcoming shows\, and more\, visit their official website: west-22nd.com

SUMMARY:Lúnasa
DESCRIPTION:Named for an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honour of the Irish god Lugh\, Lúnasa was formed in 1997 from members of some of the greatest Irish groups of the previous decade\, an early review from Folk Roots magazine describing the band as an “Irish music dream team.” From the start\, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over. Critical acclaim followed\, the Irish Echo describing the band as the “the hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet.”

SUMMARY:Nick Hexum
DESCRIPTION:“Zoom in and obsess. Zoom out and observe. We get to choose.” Rick Rubin\, The Creative Act \nYou probably already know Nick Hexum\, the crooner-voiced\, laid-back California guy who has long been the lead singer\, songwriter\, and rhythm guitarist in 311. But do you? His three EP trilogy\, Waxing Nostalgic\, Full Memories\, and Waning Time (yes\, they are named in honor of the phases of the moon)\, features a Midwestern man from Nebraska who plays mandolin and pedal steel\, and has many memories from the past he’d like to share. \n“I’m a person who pretends like stuff doesn’t bother me. So\, I knew going into writing this record that it would be cathartic for me\,” Hexum says. “I think Covid made me realize just how limited our time really is – it motivated me to create as much as possible\,” Hexum said with a laugh. “Is it too late for a midlife crisis?” \nThere is something about reaching not an age\, but a stage of life\, that forces everyone to slow down and inspires us to look around at what we’ve accomplished\, who we’ve become\, and what we’re leaving behind. For Hexum\, that meant turning to a different style of songwriting. The songs on these EPs are influenced by his foray into Americana\, both in instrumentation and songwriting. Reading Saved by a Song by Mary Gauthier and The Creative Act by Rick Rubin pushed him to explore writing far more personal songs inspired by his life. \nListening to Americana artists like Sierra Ferrell\, Faye Webster\, k.d. lang\, Patsy Cline\, and Madeleine Peyroux was part of Hexum’s path to making these EPs. The idea to release his first solo albums came after starting SKP\, a tech company that allows artists to release albums outside the major label system and retain the rights to their work. Realizing that system\, and the distribution it offered\, were at his fingertips\, was all he needed to release these songs after giving himself permission to become more vulnerable in his songwriting. “I don’t have to wait for other people to say when I can release music\,” he says. \n“Please Explain\,” a standout on Full Memories\, was co-written with Ben Kweller and is about asking one of his daughters to open up during a dark time — a plea for vulnerability. “Ben and I had this deep connection with what it’s like to be a dad and have worries\,” he says. \n“Careless\,” which Hexum has made a music video for\, was an exercise in owning up to the careless behavior we all exhibit in our relationships when we take them for granted. The music is a super-fast fingerpicker on banjo\, with flourishes of acoustic guitar\, fiddle and mandolin\, and is the closest he’s come to old-school country music in the tradition of Roy Clark and Chris Thile. \nFrom Waxing Nostalgic\, the slow dance opener that saw Hexum making his debut as a mandolin player\, is “Cosmic Connection.” It’s a little more akin to a waltz\, with a very ‘60s message about tapping into the universal and letting go of a tribal mentality of ‘us versus them.’ “We’re so much more connected and there is more harmony than feels apparent right now\,” he says. “I choose to reflect on that\, even if we feel more out of sync as a species than we have at other times.” \nFor “1978\,” Hexum collaborated with his sister\, Angie\, a poet\, on a song that serves as a visual story of growing up together. While some of the songs are written solely by him\, collaborative songwriting is a theme across the EPs. “To me\, it’s about the humility of knowing that I’ve got a lot to learn from other people\,” he explains. \nMaking a list of traumatic moments that Hexum felt he needed to explore in songs led to writing “I’m Open” on Waning Time about the time before his brother Patrick passed away following an overdose. “It’s about making these overtures to help him\, but knowing I can’t force him to change his life — but I am open to help\, if he is receptive\,” he says. Hexum\, who is sober\, discusses painful moments in the song\, like offering to discuss sobriety with his sibling\, giving him a guitar that he pawned\, and accepting that all anyone can do is offer help. \nThe EPs also contain a pair of covers\, Chapppell Roan’s “California” on Full Memories and Billie Holiday’s “Solitude” on Waning Time. Both tap into his crooner-style voice\, with Roan’s song speaking to a near-universal experience of Midwesterners who move to the coast\, East or West\, in search of a bigger life. It’s a crisis of confidence explored through the delivery of someone who has lived a whole life in California\, and reckoned with the decisions made throughout that life. The Holiday cover\, a song composed by Duke Ellington\, in which Hexum sings along to a steel guitar. It is his love letter to a singer who is one of his icons. The selection\, changes\, and arrangements on both reflect the wide variety of his influences. \nWaxing Nostalgic and Full Memories are out now. Waning Time will be released in summer 2025.

SUMMARY:Gwenifer Raymond
DESCRIPTION:Wales-born\, Brighton-based instrumentalist Gwenifer Raymond is a celebrated champion of the finger-picked guitar. She has drawn international acclaim for her repurposing of Mississippi blues and John Fahey’s intricate Americana to embody her roots in rural South Wales and her interests in folk horror and the avant garde\, inventing a new form dubbed Welsh Primitive.
