SUMMARY:Nick Hexum
DESCRIPTION:“Zoom in and obsess. Zoom out and observe. We get to choose.” Rick Rubin\, The Creative Act \nYou probably already know Nick Hexum\, the crooner-voiced\, laid-back California guy who has long been the lead singer\, songwriter\, and rhythm guitarist in 311. But do you? His three EP trilogy\, Waxing Nostalgic\, Full Memories\, and Waning Time (yes\, they are named in honor of the phases of the moon)\, features a Midwestern man from Nebraska who plays mandolin and pedal steel\, and has many memories from the past he’d like to share. \n“I’m a person who pretends like stuff doesn’t bother me. So\, I knew going into writing this record that it would be cathartic for me\,” Hexum says. “I think Covid made me realize just how limited our time really is – it motivated me to create as much as possible\,” Hexum said with a laugh. “Is it too late for a midlife crisis?” \nThere is something about reaching not an age\, but a stage of life\, that forces everyone to slow down and inspires us to look around at what we’ve accomplished\, who we’ve become\, and what we’re leaving behind. For Hexum\, that meant turning to a different style of songwriting. The songs on these EPs are influenced by his foray into Americana\, both in instrumentation and songwriting. Reading Saved by a Song by Mary Gauthier and The Creative Act by Rick Rubin pushed him to explore writing far more personal songs inspired by his life. \nListening to Americana artists like Sierra Ferrell\, Faye Webster\, k.d. lang\, Patsy Cline\, and Madeleine Peyroux was part of Hexum’s path to making these EPs. The idea to release his first solo albums came after starting SKP\, a tech company that allows artists to release albums outside the major label system and retain the rights to their work. Realizing that system\, and the distribution it offered\, were at his fingertips\, was all he needed to release these songs after giving himself permission to become more vulnerable in his songwriting. “I don’t have to wait for other people to say when I can release music\,” he says. \n“Please Explain\,” a standout on Full Memories\, was co-written with Ben Kweller and is about asking one of his daughters to open up during a dark time — a plea for vulnerability. “Ben and I had this deep connection with what it’s like to be a dad and have worries\,” he says. \n“Careless\,” which Hexum has made a music video for\, was an exercise in owning up to the careless behavior we all exhibit in our relationships when we take them for granted. The music is a super-fast fingerpicker on banjo\, with flourishes of acoustic guitar\, fiddle and mandolin\, and is the closest he’s come to old-school country music in the tradition of Roy Clark and Chris Thile. \nFrom Waxing Nostalgic\, the slow dance opener that saw Hexum making his debut as a mandolin player\, is “Cosmic Connection.” It’s a little more akin to a waltz\, with a very ‘60s message about tapping into the universal and letting go of a tribal mentality of ‘us versus them.’ “We’re so much more connected and there is more harmony than feels apparent right now\,” he says. “I choose to reflect on that\, even if we feel more out of sync as a species than we have at other times.” \nFor “1978\,” Hexum collaborated with his sister\, Angie\, a poet\, on a song that serves as a visual story of growing up together. While some of the songs are written solely by him\, collaborative songwriting is a theme across the EPs. “To me\, it’s about the humility of knowing that I’ve got a lot to learn from other people\,” he explains. \nMaking a list of traumatic moments that Hexum felt he needed to explore in songs led to writing “I’m Open” on Waning Time about the time before his brother Patrick passed away following an overdose. “It’s about making these overtures to help him\, but knowing I can’t force him to change his life — but I am open to help\, if he is receptive\,” he says. Hexum\, who is sober\, discusses painful moments in the song\, like offering to discuss sobriety with his sibling\, giving him a guitar that he pawned\, and accepting that all anyone can do is offer help. \nThe EPs also contain a pair of covers\, Chapppell Roan’s “California” on Full Memories and Billie Holiday’s “Solitude” on Waning Time. Both tap into his crooner-style voice\, with Roan’s song speaking to a near-universal experience of Midwesterners who move to the coast\, East or West\, in search of a bigger life. It’s a crisis of confidence explored through the delivery of someone who has lived a whole life in California\, and reckoned with the decisions made throughout that life. The Holiday cover\, a song composed by Duke Ellington\, in which Hexum sings along to a steel guitar. It is his love letter to a singer who is one of his icons. The selection\, changes\, and arrangements on both reflect the wide variety of his influences. \nWaxing Nostalgic and Full Memories are out now. Waning Time will be released in summer 2025.

SUMMARY:Pink Martini
DESCRIPTION:In 1994\, in his hometown of Portland\, Oregon\, Thomas Lauderdale was working in politics\, thinking he would run for mayor one day.  Like other eager politicians-in-training\, he went to every political fundraiser under the sun… but was dismayed to find the music at these events underwhelming\, lackluster\, loud\, and un-neighborly. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world—crossing genres of classical\, jazz and old-fashioned pop—and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike\, he founded the “little orchestra” Pink Martini in 1994. His aim? To provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers supporting causes such as civil rights\, affordable housing\, the environment\, libraries\, public broadcasting\, education\, and parks. \nOne year later\, Lauderdale called China Forbes\, a Harvard classmate living in New York City\, and asked her to join Pink Martini. They began to write songs together. Their first\, “Sympathique\,”was an overnight sensation in France and nominated for Song of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique Awards. To this day\, it remains a mantra for striking workers: “Je neveuxpas travailler (I don’t want to work)”. \nDoors at 6:30 pm. Show starts at 7:30 pm. \n\nMore Information

SUMMARY:Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra
DESCRIPTION:Ottmar Liebert’s global success can be attributed to a myriad of things – his creative vision\, his determination\, and a strong sense of melody. Born in Cologne\, Germany\, he began playing guitar at 11. Before the age of 19\, Liebert had intended to stay in Germany and pursue a career as a designer and photographer. However\, while journeying extensively through Asia and playing with other travelers and local musicians\, he realised that he could not escape a life of music. After pursuing his dreams of playing rock music in Boston\, he settled in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. Santa Fe was a fresh start for Liebert in many ways and in addition to returning to the acoustic guitar\, he remained open to letting the place define the music he made. It was this openness to the local landscape that defined what was to become his musical style\, a mix of Spanish\, Mexican and World elements\, strong melodies tinged with a shade of melancholy\, balanced with upbeat rhythms. \nLiebert founded the first incarnation of his band\, Luna Negra\, in 1989. His debut album began as a self-produced release called Marita: Shadows and Storms\, copies of which local Native American artist\, Frank Howell\, distributed in his art galleries. After the record made its way to radio stations\, it began generating a buzz among programmers and received unprecedented response among listeners. Higher Octave Music picked it up and released a fully remastered version\, Nouveau Flamenco. Recorded for less than $3\,000 on an old analog machine in a shack beside a gravel pit\, this CD became an international sensation\, establishing Liebert’s unique border-style flamenco\, and becoming the best-selling instrumental acoustic guitar album of all time: \n2 x Platinum – USA\n14 x Platinum – USA/Latin\nPlatinum – Australia\nPlatinum – New Zealand\nGold – Canada\nGold – Mexico \nVisual art has always been essential to Ottmar Liebert’s world-view and even today he is an avid photographer. “My music is visual\,” Liebert says. “Santa Fe has great light\, that special thing you get in the high desert. Some days you can see for 100 miles\, and think you can reach into the sky or walk off a ridge and keep flying. That’s how I felt when I recorded Nouveau Flamenco.” \nLiebert has since become one of the most successful instrumental artists of the past decades\, entertaining audiences around the world and releasing a catalog of 33 classic albums including live recordings\, an orchestral album for Sony Classical\, a binaural surround sound recording\, remix albums\, a lullaby and a flamenco-reggae album. During his career\, he has played more than two thousand concerts worldwide. Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra have played two concerts with the New Mexico Philharmonic featuring Liebert’s music arranged by bassist\, Jon Gagan. These two concerts\, to date\, have broken attendance records for the New Mexico Philharmonic. Ottmar Liebert has been nominated for five Grammy awards.

SUMMARY:Charlie Parr w/ The Lowest Pair
DESCRIPTION:CHARLIE PARR \nIn the music of Charlie Parr\, there is a sincere conviction and earnest drive to create. The Minnesota-born guitarist\, songwriter\, and interpreter of traditional music has released 19 albums over two decades and has been known to perform up to 275 shows a year. Parr is a folk troubadour in the truest sense: taking to the road between shows\, writing and rewriting songs as he plays\, fueled by a belief that music is eternal and cannot be claimed or adequately explained. The bluesman poet pulls closely from the sights and sounds around him\, his lyrical craftsmanship built by his influences. The sounds from his working-class upbringing—including Folkways legends such as Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie—imbue Parr’s music with stylistic echoes of blues and folk icons of decades past. Parr sees himself merely as a continuer of a folk tradition: “I feel like I stand on a lot of big shoulders\,” he said in an interview. “I hope that I’ve brought a little bit of myself to the music.” \nWith a discography simultaneously transcendental in nature and grounded in roots music\, Charlie Parr is the humble master of the 21st century folk tradition. Parr started recording in Duluth in 2002\, where he lives today. Life in the port town on Lake Superior has a way of bleeding into his work the same way his childhood in Austin\, Minnesota does. Parr self-released his debut album\, Criminals and Sinners\, and did the same for his sophomore album 1922 (2002). With growing popularity abroad\, Parr signed with Red House Records in 2015\, where he recorded break-out albums Stumpjumper (2015) and Dog (2017). Parr’s music has an overwhelming sense of being present and mindful\, and his sound is timeless. \nParr’s mastery of his craft is only more apparent when contextualized within the history of folk tradition of which Parr has dedicated his practice The land and lives around and intersecting with Parr have always influenced him\, from the hills and valleys of Hollandale\, Minnesota to the Depression-era stories from his father. Parr strives to listen to everything: “I don’t see that I’d ever be capable of creating anything if it weren’t for these inspirations and influences\, books and music as well as the weather and random interactions with strangers and animals. So\, the well never runs dry as long as my eyes and ears are open\,” Parr said in a 2020 interview. Before he was even 10 years old Parr was rummaging through his father’s record collection—sometimes drawing dinosaurs on the vinyl sleeves—and listening to country\, folk\, and blues legends\, many of whom are staples in the Folkways catalog. When Parr sings and plays his resonator or 12-string\, you can hear influences like Mance Lipscomb\, Charley Patton\, Spinder John Koerner\, Rev. Gary Davis\, and Dock Boggs. This is especially true in his playing\, when\, after a diagnosis of focal dystonia\, Parr turned to greats like Davis\, Doc Watson\, and Booker White for two-finger picking inspiration. Gifted a 1965 Gibson B-45 12-string by his father\, Parr has never had a formal lesson and learned by to listening records and watching musicians he admired. \nParr’s first album with Smithsonian Folkways\, Last of Better Days Head (2021)\, foregrounded his lyrical craftsmanship and sophisticated bluesman confidence\, with spare production highlighting Parr’s mastery of guitar and elevating his poetry. Last of Better Days Ahead is a portrait of how Parr saw the world in that moment\, reflecting on time and memories that have past while holding an enduring desire to be present. In his 2024 release\, Little Sun\, Parr weaves together stories celebrating music\, community\, and communing with nature. Putting forth an ambitious and raw album that exemplifies the best of Parr’s sound: a blend of the blues and folk traditions he continues to carry with him and the steadfast originality of a poet. \n  \nTHE LOWEST PAIR \n“Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee\, both playing guitar and banjo and trading vocals; hers an achingly beautiful distinctive tone that complements his smoky delivery to perfection.” –– Americana UK \n\nThe Lowest Pair has questions. The duo\, made up of Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee\, know that we tend to see duality as a problem. We want life to be linear\, working through the dark to finally get to the light. Grief to joy\, despair to hope\, confusion to clarity––not a jangly cycle we can’t escape. But through their incandescent folk songs\, the Lowest Pair often ask: What if we sit with the mess? What if that’s not just more peaceful\, but more magical\, too? \nOn their 8th album Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be\, the Lowest Pair prove that over the last dozen years together\, they’ve become some of modern roots music’s most mesmerizing\, thoughtful purveyors. Produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists)\, the 10-track album puts the duo’s stark lyricism\, string-driven arrangements\, and raw compatibility on brilliant display and as a result\, Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be pulses with life. \nThe Lowest Pair’s musicianship is another beautiful testament not just to playing that breathes\, but playing that listens. Winter\, who grew up in Arkansas but has lived in Washington State for the last two decades\, and Lee\, a Minnesota native\, first gained attention as poetic singer-songwriters on banjos. While their family of strings has expanded\, their fundamental approach hasn’t: Respond to sounds and stories the other is making.
