SUMMARY:JOE JACKSON + BAND - HOPE AND FURY TOUR 2026
DESCRIPTION:Joe Jackson was born on August 11\, 1954 in Burton-on-Trent\, England\, but grew up in the South Coast naval port city of Portsmouth.  At age 16 Joe played his first paying gig\, as pianist in a pub next doorto a glue factory just outside of Portsmouth. This was followed by other pub gigs (in which he was often trying to entertain crowds of drunken\, bottle-throwing sailors) and accompanying a bouzouki player in a Greek restaurant. \nBy 1978 Joe was living in London and hawking an album-length demo\, with his own band (Graham Maby\, Bass; Dave Houghton\, Drums; Gary Sanford\, Guitar) standing by. That demo – already called Look Sharp – eventually found its way to American producer David Kershenbaum\, who was in London in the capacity of talent scout for A&M Records. Joe was immediately signed and Look Sharp more professionally re-recorded in August ’78. The Joe Jackson Band finally started to play regular gigs and the album was released in January 1979. \nDoors at 6:30 pm Show starts at 7:30 pm. \n\nMore Information

Adam Bhala Lough – 2026 – 90m – Valid for Punch Cards \nWhen Los Angeles filmmaker Adam Bhala Lough fails to land an interview with the elusive Sam Altman\, he travels to India to deepfake the tech CEO\, only to create a glitchy LLM “Sam Bot” that moves into his home\, befriends his son and begins co-directing the movie. As Sam Bot grows more lifelike\, Adam is forced to decide whether to delete the AI he accidentally brought to life\, and the film becomes a sharp\, surprisingly moving exploration of how humans navigate the chaotic new world of artificial intelligence. \n“A thought-provoking approach to the dilemmas of the new digital era.” – Fast Company \n“A globe-trotting\, thought-provoking\, utterly surreal exploration.” – Rolling Stone \n“SARDONIC AND SURPRISINGLY SWEET” – ScreenRant

SUMMARY:Highlander (1986)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Russell Mulcahy – 1986 – 110m – Valid for Punch Cards \nThe original 80’s HIGHLANDER feature with that great Queen soundtrack! When Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) is slain in battle in the Scottish Highlands\, his kinsfolk don’t mourn the tragedy of his death – they mourn the seeming witchcraft that’s brought him back to life. But MacLeod can’t die\, and neither can Juan Ramírez (Sean Connery)\, who befriends Connor and shows him what it means to be immortal. Time dissolves\, the centuries pass\, and Connor and his fellow immortals are drawn to New York City\, where one will be awarded the Prize while the rest lose their literal heads. This is the timeless tale that launched a film and TV franchise\, beloved by millions of fans worldwide. This is HIGHLANDER! \n“Russell Mulcahy’s Highlander is without a doubt one of the finest cult films of the 1980s. This 1986 film is a wonderful action-fantasy romp that pretty much works on every level.” – Niall Browne\, Movies in Focus \n“A truly heroic stomp through time and space.” – Matt Ford\, BBC.com

Nancy senses a potential in Kristen to rid the world of Freddy once and for all. \n“Full of great special effects and with Freddy’s pre-history filled in very satisfyingly\, this is a rollercoaster ride from the opening Edgar Allan Poe quotation to the final Ray Harryhausen homage.” – Alan Jones\, Radio Times \n“Drive-In Academy Award nominations for… Robert Englund\, as Freddy Krueger\, the one and only\, and Chuck Russel\, the director\, for doing a heck of a job.” – Bill Briggs\, Orlando Sentinel

SUMMARY:The Cost Of Creating
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Mark Archuleta – 2026 – 20m – Not Valid for Punch Cards \n\n\nThe Cost of Creating is a documentary exploring the sacrifices\, struggles\, and personal realities behind the work of artists.  While the public often sees the finished piece—the painting\, the performance\, the music\, the exhibition—this film looks at the hidden side of that process: the time\, risk\, emotional investment\, and uncertainty that artists carry in order to create. Through intimate interviews and cinematic portraits of New Mexico artists\, the film asks a central question: what does it actually cost to devote your life to creating \nFeaturing artists from across the Albuquerque creative community\, the documentary explores themes of dedication\, identity\, financial reality\, family balance\, and the internal drive that pushes artists to continue creating despite the challenges. Following the screening\, there will be a short conversation with the filmmaker and participating artists about the realities of sustaining a creative life. This event offers a rare look behind the curtain of artistic practice and celebrates the resilience and passion of the local creative community. \nMark Archuleta is an Albuquerque-based filmmaker and the founder of Marchuleta Productions. His work focuses on documenting artists\, creators\, and the cultural landscape of New Mexico through intimate and cinematic storytelling. He is the creator of the documentary series Meet the Artist\, which explores the lives and creative practices of artists across the state. His films emphasize the process of creation and the personal stories behind artistic work. The Cost of Creating continues that exploration by examining the sacrifices artists make in order to pursue their craft. \nABOUT MARCHULETA PRODUCTIONS \nIndependent film production focused on documentary storytelling about artists\, culture\, and creative life in New Mexico.

SUMMARY:Ásgeir
DESCRIPTION:As one of Iceland’s most successful exports\, singer-songwriter Ásgeir has always pushed the boundaries of his thoughtful brand of folk-pop. His debut album\, ‘Dýrð í dauðaþögn’\, became the best-selling debut in Icelandic history\, leading to the English-language version ‘In The Silence’ in 2014. He continued to refine his sound with ‘Afterglow’ in 2017\, ‘Bury The Moon’ in 2020\, and ‘Time On My Hands’ in 2022’\, earning praise from press and radio worldwide\, including the likes of The Independent\, MOJO\, NME\, The Line Of Best Fit\, Clash Magazine\, BBC 6 Music and Radio X. \nIn recent years\, Ásgeir has embraced solo performances\, playing nearly 70 intimate shows across Europe\, the Nordics\, and Iceland\, including a UK tour with Icelandic singer GDRN. He also performed with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and recorded a live session for Arte TV in Berlin. His passion for live music has taken him to unique venues\, including small churches\, deepening his connection with audiences. He wrote a song for a Kafkaesque play that was hosted at The Reykjavik City Theatre called Sýslumaður Dauðans. \nCurrently\, Ásgeir is preparing for his next album\, focusing on songwriting with a fresh approach; prioritizing melody and personal storytelling\, exploring themes of relationships\, aging\, hope\, and nostalgia. His influences range from Leonard Cohen and Daniel Lanois to contemporary artists like Adrianne Lenker and Dina Ögon. \nThe album’s production was a hands-on process\, with Ásgeir playing most of the instruments and collaborating with a select group of musicians\, including Nashville cellist Nat Smith. Recorded both solo and with a band\, the songs capture an organic\, heartfelt energy. With this new chapter\, Ásgeir continues to evolve\, offering music that is as introspective and accomplished as ever as well as deeply resonant.

WITH THE UNDER PLAYED 70’S GEM TOP OF THE HEAP (1972)! \nThe film follows Dan Freeman (played by Lawrence Cook)\, an African American man who becomes the first black CIA officer. His hiring is initially a token gesture to placate civil rights activists and project an image of inclusivity within the agency. However\, Freeman proves to be highly competent\, quickly mastering espionage techniques and tactics. Despite his skills\, he is relegated to a low-profile\, menial position\, symbolically seated by the door to serve as a token black employee. Growing increasingly disillusioned with the systemic racism and marginalization he experiences\, Freeman decides to use his training for a revolutionary cause. He resigns from the CIA and returns to his hometown of Chicago\, where he begins to recruit and train a militant group of young African Americans. Utilizing the guerrilla warfare techniques he learned at the CIA\, Freeman’s group\, disguised as a community organization\, aims to fight against racial oppression and challenge the status quo. As Freeman’s insurgency grows\, it attracts the attention of law enforcement and government officials\, leading to a tense and escalating conflict. The film explores themes of racial identity\, institutional racism\, and the complexities of resistance. “The Spook Who Sat By the Door” is a powerful and thought-provoking film that examines the potential for radical change and the lengths to which oppressed individuals might go to achieve liberation. It remains a significant work for its bold portrayal of racial and political issues\, and its critique of both governmental and societal structures. \n“One of the few uncompromised representations of black armed resistance in the United States.” – Cynthia Fuchs\, PopMatters \n“Possibly the most radical of the blaxploitation films of the 70s\, this movie was an overnight success when released in 1973\, then was abruptly taken out of distribution for reasons still not entirely clear.” – Jonathan Rosenbaum\, Chicago Reader.

SUMMARY:Top Of The Heap (1972)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Christopher St. John – 1972 – 90m – Valid for Punch Cards \nIt’s on! Author of the the superb compendium Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference Guide Josiah Howard (who also curated all the chosen films for this midweek) will be in our cinema house to introduce & do a post screening discussion! Welcome to BLAXPLOITATION MIDWEEK! \nDOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE PRICE-OF-ONE\, SEE ONE OR BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE OUTSTANDING SINGULAR IVAN DIXON FEATURE THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR (1973)! \nA year after his supporting role in the blockbuster Shaft\, Christopher St. John wrote\, directed\, and starred in this kaleidoscopic fever dream of a Black cop’s crisis of sanity after being passed over for a promotion\, and the death of his mother. \nWith dreamlike imagery depicting St. John’s George Lattimer as a war hero\, astronaut\, and other representations of American idealism\, the film tackles the contradiction of a Black man who follows the ‘rules’ in a position of power\, only to find himself trapped in the same impossible position he was in before joining the police. Top of the Heap is an underrated twist on Blaxploitation cinema\, and an essential piece of American independent film\, free of studio interference and muddled messaging. \n“As written\, the film is punctuated by escapist visions in which Lattimer pictures himself a revered astronaut in a lacquered 2001-esque space station\, but outer space isn’t far enough to elude the earthly news of his mother’s death; the only approaching celestial “voyage” on his itinerary is to her funeral in rural Alabama. In this dark substitution\, the film reckons not only with systemic prejudice but the cosmic menace of aging and death—or rather\, demonstrates Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s definition of racism as “the state-sanctioned or extralegal production and exploitation of group-differentiated vulnerability to premature death.”’ ~ Veronica Fitzpatrick\, Screen Slate

Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai\, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village\, where\, one day\, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy\, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens\, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. In thirty-nine of his signature long takes\, engraved in ghostly black and white\, Tarr conjures an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty. \n“Mesmerizing\, haunting\, deeply moving.” – Diane Carson\, KDHX (St. Louis) \n“It is an arduous task\, but the film achieves a transcendent and ethereal beauty that only the few truly great masterpieces attain.” – Derek Smith\, Cinematic Reflections
