DESCRIPTION:With the arrival of their debut EP Life and Life Only\, The Heavy Heavy immediately filled a longtime void in the musical landscape\, delivering a soulful breed of rock & roll untouched by modern artifice. As audiences across the globe grew enchanted with their era-bending sound\, the UK-based band began selling out headline shows in major cities like New York and Chicago\, opening for the likes of Black Pumas and Band of Horses\, and earning critical comparisons to Jefferson Airplane\, The Band\, The Mamas & The Papas\, and more—all with only a handful of songs to their name\, including the AAA radio top five singles “Miles and Miles” and “Go Down River.” After spending the past two years on the road and in the studio\, The Heavy Heavy now draw listeners even deeper into their dreamworld with their long-awaited debut album One Of A Kind. \nWritten entirely by co-founders Georgie Fuller and William Turner and mostly recorded at Turner’s studio in Brighton\, One Of A Kind maintains the self-contained approach of Life and Life Only—a seven-song project acclaimed by outlets like NME (who named them an essential emerging artist for 2023) and The Guardian (who noted that The Heavy Heavy “write and play music with that lick of madness that makes early Fleetwood Mac and peak Stones so thrilling”). To that end\, Turner produced\, engineered\, and mixed every track and handled most of the LP’s lavish instrumentation (including guitar\, bass\, piano\, organ\, Mellotron\, and more)\, with The Heavy Heavy’s live band lending their explosive energy to the album. But in a departure from the EP\, One Of A Kind leans away from Laurel Canyon-esque folk-rock and fully embraces their British roots\, finding a particularly crucial inspiration in the gritty and groove-heavy hedonism of the Rolling Stones’ Goats Head Soup. “A lot of our EP was very bright and pretty\, so we wanted to smash the door down like we do in the live show\,” says Turner. “Because we were creating an entire album\, there was so much more space to explore and expand\,” Fuller adds. “It’s still undoubtedly that Heavy Heavy sound\, but now we have all these other rooms to play around in.” \nFor One Of A Kind’s lead single\, The Heavy Heavy chose a sun-drenched and sing-along-ready number that serves as an auspicious bridge to the band’s new era. The last song written for the album\, “Happiness” bends toward the lush psych-pop of Life and Life Only while introducing a new level of visceral intensity. “We felt we needed a song that had that summery\, flowery feel of the EP\, and somehow at the last minute we were able to pull magic out of thin air\,” Fuller recalls. A fast fan favorite at their live shows\, “Happiness” channels a bold determination to break free from loneliness and stagnation\, ultimately providing an automatic mood lift thanks to The Heavy Heavy’s resplendent melodies and signature multi-part harmonies. \nKicking off with a majestic bang\, One Of A Kind opens on the rolling drumbeats and walloping riffs of its title track—a feverishly chanted anthem whose lyrics transform the listener into the protagonist of their own impossibly glamorous movie (e.g.\, “You’re getting down/You’re keeping on/You look the best/You’re all night howling”). Graced with a breathtaking vocal performance from Fuller (a classically trained singer)\, “One Of A Kind” quickly set the tone for the album’s larger-than-life vitality. “Something about the primal nature of that song inspired us to keep making songs that feel quite big and powerful\,” says Turner. Later\, on “Because You’re Mine\,” The Heavy Heavy sustain that feel-good spirit and share a carefree love song lit up in slinky grooves and hallucinatory lyrics depicting what Fuller refers to as “the psychedelic daydream of a wandering nomad type—someone who goes wherever the wind takes them.” \nAs One Of A Kind floats along\, The Heavy Heavy endlessly push into previously uncharted sonic terrain\, tapping into such unexpected influences as mid-’90s big beat on the bass-driven and gorgeously hazy “Miracle Sun.” “It’s a song with a lot of attitude to it—sort of our way of telling the world\, ‘We’re living the way we want to live\, and it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand\,’” says Turner. Meanwhile\, on “Feel\,” the band merges the mesmerizing grooves of Madchester-era Britpop with a bit of idiosyncratic poetry (“I am a freeloader love junkie/A real heavy cannonball and I’m hungry…I stand between the sun\, between the stone/I feel it in my fingers\, feel it in my bones”). And on “Wild Emotion\,” One Of A Kind offers up a country-infused serenade laced with galloping rhythms and twangy guitar tones partly inspired by the work of Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler. “That’s probably the most emotional song on the album\,” Turner points out. “It’s meant to have a reassuring message\, but at its center is the story of a woman who’s gone through a heartbreak and can’t find her way out of feeling hopeless and distraught.” \nAfter journeying through a whirlwind of sounds and textures—the hypnotic Mellotron of “Lemonade\,” the frenetic psych-rock organ and skyscraping vocals of “Dirt\,” the earthy acoustic guitar and sweetly playful harmonies of “Lovestruck”—One Of A Kind lands at the reverb-soaked splendor of its closing track\, “Salina.” Named for a sparsely populated volcanic island off the coast of Sicily (an otherworldly spot Fuller and Turner visited on vacation)\, the slow-building epic unfolds in so many exquisitely strange sonic details: moody cello lines\, thundering percussion\, a spellbinding pedal-steel part simultaneously played by two separate guest musicians. “‘Salina’ was one of those moments where we let ourselves get experimental with the production and create a whole ocean of sound\,” says Fuller. “We knew we had to put it at the end and let the reverb ring out in those final seconds—almost as if we’re leaving the album hanging in the air.” \nFormed in 2019\, The Heavy Heavy emerged from a potent alchemy of their eclectic sensibilities. Hailing from the small town of Malvern (a stretch of the English countryside he describes as “a beautiful place full of hippies and longhaired people”)\, Turner took up guitar in his early teens and later played in a series of psychedelic/surf-rock bands\, while Fuller’s extensive background includes performing at Montreux Jazz Festival as a teenager and acting in the London theater. As they moved forward with a mission of “making music that sounds like our favorite records ever” (including everything from Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac to folk-blues act Delaney & Bonnie to Fleet Foxes)\, the duo dreamed up a batch of songs in a London flat and self-released an early version of Life and Life Only in late 2020\, eventually catching the attention of ATO Records and signing with the U.S.-based label in 2022. Fueled in part by the breakout success of “Miles and Miles” (their ATO debut single)\, The Heavy Heavy’s five-piece live band soon began playing bigger and bigger venues and taking the stage at leading festivals like Bonnaroo\, Boston Calling\, and Newport Folk Festival\, in addition to performing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!\,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert\,” and “CBS Saturday Morning” and scoring major syncs with the likes of Nissan and Netflix’s “Outer Banks.” \nBecause of the rapturous response to their debut EP\, The Heavy Heavy found themselves in an unfamiliar headspace when it came to the creation of One Of A Kind. “With the EP we were making songs as a way to soundtrack our own lives\, but now it’s a different beast—it’s no longer theoretical\, which gives everything more weight\,” says Turner. But in the end\, the band discovered an essential touchstone in the connection they’ve forged with their fans over the last two years. “Not too long ago\, a woman came up to us at a show and told us she was getting a tattoo of one of our lyrics to remind herself to keep pushing on and keep chasing her dreams\,” Fuller says. “Moments like that always remind us that as long as we keep making what feels good\, chances are it’s going to make other people feel good too. I hope this album feels like a great big party to everyone\, and I hope it inspires them to live their lives however they want.” \n  \nLOU HAZEL \nLou Hazel grew up along the Allegheny River\, where New York meets Pennsylvania and Northern Appalachia slips into quiet obscurity. In a landscape of cold towns\, blue-collar fatigue\, and early brushes with hardship\, music wasn’t inherited—it was uncovered. There were no venues\, no mentors\, no real sense of a scene… only what you could scrape together with curiosity and a cassette deck. \nThat absence—of direction\, of mentors\, of art—shaped Lou’s songs as much as any influence. His music echoes the loneliness of those forgotten towns and the strange resilience it takes to create something where nothing was planted. Blending folk\, indie\, and an eye for the overlooked\, Lou writes like someone who’s learned to pay attention. His songs are spare\, vivid\, and weathered with warmth. \nAfter years of solo touring and home recording\, Lou found grounding in Durham\, North Carolina\, where a vibrant music scene and chosen community have helped shape his recent work. His latest record\, Riot of the Red\, captures the urge to get away from all of it—the news\, the noise\, the weight of a world gone sideways—and find stillness in the simplest things: a long drive\, a bare sky\, a familiar chord. Lou Hazel makes music for those who had to teach themselves how to listen.

DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter Kelly Willis captured critical acclaim from her first release\, with a distinctive voice that conveys both tender heartache and smoldering heat. Born in Oklahoma\, she moved often as a kid with her Army Colonel dad. She started singing professionally at 16\, fronting the rockabilly band “Kelly and the Fireballs” in the DC area\, but it soon became clear she was more of a country singer. After high school\, she moved to Austin and it wasn’t long before she got on the radar of MCA’s Tony Brown\, who signed her after an introduction by Nanci Griffith. \nKelly’s recording career began at a time when Nashville was experiencing a creative resurgence with the likes of Lyle Lovett\, Steve Earle\, Foster & Lloyd and The O’Kanes. She recorded three albums for MCA that were critical hits\, but it wasn’t until she left the major label restrictions behind that she came into her own with 1999’s What I Deserve for Rykodisc. \nThe albums Willis has made since What I Deserve have only burnished her reputation as Austin’s reigning queen of Americana\, including being inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame. When not performing her own music\, Kelly tours with Brennan Leigh and Melissa Carper as Wonder Women of Country\, in support of their 2023 self-titled EP.

DESCRIPTION:Jensen McRae could’ve been down for the count. “The most profound choices of my life\,” she says\, “have often felt like things I did before I was ready to do\, and I had to grow into them.” McRae’s songs give shape to these leaps\, cliff jumps\, and trust falls\, and on her new album\, I Don’t Know How But They Found Me!\, she goes further than ever\, evolving from a promising young artist into a fully realized songwriter and star. \n“It’s about realizing what you can’t outrun\, and what follows when you have withstood what you thought might crush you\,” she explains. “There are things that can happen to us—unthinkable\, untenable things—that threaten our safety in our own bodies. They happen\, and you feel like the only option is escape. In truth\, the only way out is in—back into the place you have always lived.” A home—Jensen front and center\, possibly leaving\, possibly arriving—adorns the album artwork. “You can leave the city\, you can leave the lover\,” McRae continues\, “but you can never leave yourself.” \nFrom the beginning\, fans have connected to McRae’s sharp\, evocative\, clear-eyed songwriting. An avid journaler\, she has been documenting her life since she was 18. Her first album\, Are You Happy Now?\, was a mission statement from an artist who grew up an automatic outsider: a Black Jewish girl from Los Angeles determined to make folk music despite the world’s attempts to box her into more stereotypical genres. Drawing inspiration from songwriting heroes like Alicia Keys\, Carole King\, James Taylor\, and Stevie Wonder\, McRae built a sonic world entirely her own. As her audience grew\, the album became “the record of my coming-of-age—but a quiet one\, mostly taking place inside my own head.” \nI Don’t Know How But They Found Me! unfolds against the backdrop of romantic turbulence and McRae’s rapidly expanding fanbase. “I had never been in love before—not really\,” she says. “Then I had two life-altering relationships back to back in my early twenties. This album explores how love and intimacy can knock the wind out of you\, take your legs out from under you.”\nMcRae has also experienced multiple viral moments. In 2023\, she shared a verse and chorus online—barely more than a demo—and it took off. Covers\, duets\, and an avalanche of new fans followed\, including Justin Bieber\, Stormzy\, and Dan Nigro. That song became “Massachusetts\,” her first release with Dead Oceans. \nThe album further affirms McRae’s defiance of expectations as she deepens her singer-songwriter credentials and claims space for young Black women in the genre. “I still feel like I’m pushing a boulder up a hill\,” she says. “Even with success and hard work\, I hit walls that aren’t there for other people. That’s part of why I make music—to be seen and to help others feel seen. But I remain somewhat misunderstood.” \nMcRae’s voice captures both the heartbreak of being left and of doing the leaving. Wispy and textured at times\, clear and bright at others\, her singing is as multidimensional as her lyrics. When the country-leaning single “Savannah” reaches its crescendo\, piano and guitar stack beneath her as she delivers scathing lines with grit and conviction: “You swore you’d raise our kids to end up just like you / well you’re a false prophet / and that’s a goddamn promise.” \n“Let Me Be Wrong” is a buoyant ode to rejecting perfectionism\, building from a simple acoustic melody into a full-bodied release\, capped by a raw\, crowd-ready line—“fuck those girls got everything.” The softer but devastating “Daffodils” explores intimacy and pain\, with the line “he cleaned my clock / he bought me daffodils\,” which McRae calls one of the album’s most emotionally brutal moments. Along with “Tuesday\,” it addresses the album’s heaviest themes\, including substance abuse and assault\, and how those dangers creep in slowly within intimate relationships. “Mother Wound” examines how emotional unavailability reshapes expectations of love. \nDespite its weight\, the album finds moments of light. Opener “The Rearranger” shimmers with nostalgia. “Novelty” is a situationship anthem celebrating the one that got away. “Praying For Your Downfall” blends snark and charm\, marking McRae’s shift into self-assuredness and perspective. \nMcRae recorded the album in North Carolina with producer Brad Cook (Waxahatchee\, Bon Iver)\, alongside Nathan Stocker of Hippocampus on guitar\, Matthew McCaughan of Bon Iver on drums\, and her brother Holden McRae on keys. “It felt like summer camp\,” she says. “None of us wanted to leave. It was ten joyful days of pure creative expression.” \nThe album’s title comes from Back to the Future\, referencing a character who survives a hail of bullets. “I connected with the idea that I could’ve collapsed beneath the weight of what happened to me—but I didn’t\,” McRae says. “I didn’t even know it\, but I was bulletproof the whole time.”

DESCRIPTION:Psychedelic black metal from Finland \n\n\n\n\nOranssi Pazuzu \nFour years in the making\, ORANSSI PAZUZU spew forth their latest mutational meisterwerk\, Muuntautuja (or Shapeshifter in English) set to be released on October 11th\,\, 2024 via Nuclear Blast Records. A boa constrictor of slithering\, warping\, interdimensional cosmic horror\, Muuntautuja is in a world of its own\, seeping through the speakers like irradiated sand. Ever transmuting\, unsettling chords that raise the hairs on the back of your head and then pummel it with nauseating rhythms that both transport and destroy you. Muuntautuja is like an encounter with a maleficent being\, well and truly unhinged\, that’s out to mess with your brain. Where delays distort in a dust cloud\, riffs are white noise discharge and time signatures interweave\, to create the genre that ORANSSI PAZUZU inhabits alone. A convulsing mass on collision course\, the air-borne sonic viral load of Muuntautuja is undeniably infectious\, and bound to turn heads.\nIf Nasa discover a new form of metal element under the surface of Mars they would have to call it ORANSSI PAZUZU\, a band that’s uncharted and pushing the boundaries of what heavy\, extreme music should sound like. From their first spaced out underground Black Metal album Muukalainen Puhuu (2009)\, to second album Kosmonument (2011)\, their first album to get wider distribution\, to their then-next record Valonielu (2013)\, which saw them delve deeper and weirder into Psychedelic Black Metal\, setting the stage for Värähtelijä (2016)\, arguably their breakthrough record\, ORANSSI PAZUZU have been impossible to pigeon-hole and a feast for those who dig deep\, heavy and strange. \nNot so much a reinvention of form as a creative zenith\, where ORANSSI PAZUZU have struck a vein of gold in the wasteland\, the irony of it is that Muuntautuja sounds like the album they have been diligently mining all along. Dense\, ferocious\, glistening\, blistering and buzzing\, Muuntautuja is like tuning in and dropping out to hostile alien signals. The title of the album\, meaning Shapeshifter\, is a perfect description of the ORANSSI PAZUZU that emerged from their extraterrestrial cocoon in 2024. A new form of being\, but whose flesh is eerily familiar\, Muuntautuja sees ORANSSI PAZUZU contort their signature noise into something truly fearsome from their critically acclaimed previous album Mestarin kynsi (2020). Noise has always been a part of the classic Black Metal sound but Muuntautuja takes it to a more shattering and violent culmination.\nBass player Ontto elaborates on Muuntautuja’s explosion of experimental and harsh sound when he talks about “noise as a compositional tool” and adds: “The noisier and the more experimental stuff came from a necessity to reinvent the way we were writing songs. The change was already in motion on Mestarin kynsi\, but on the new album we really felt we wanted to shed the old skin and find new angles.”\nVocalist Jun-His agrees when he states:\n“We felt that we could express things that we have been only flirting with previously. The noisier experiments started happening during live versions of Taivaan portti from the previous album\, and it felt good to not leave it to that\, but to expand on it.” \nWhen the protagonist of a movie or novel starts to unravel\, and the world becomes malevolent\, we’d imagine introducing the beginning of the track ‘Ikikäärme’\, and let the celestial science fiction of it’s sound-track take us to Ari Aster or Robert Eggers like cinematic terror. Undercurrent layers swell in an alien language\, inescapable and claustrophobic. Gestating a new form of metal in their host bodies\, humid\, equatorial and febrile\, on Muuntautuja\, ORANSSI PAZUZU constantly transpose and shift key\, leaving us high and dry\, exposed in space with no umbilical for air.\nIf we delve into the centre of Muuntautuja\, there is pure darkness. As the lyrics of ‘Hautatuuli’ (or “Grave Wind” in English) repeat in whispered\, mantra-like succession\, “gate behind a . . .gate behind a”\, behind the gate there is a gate and we have to keep entering the many levels of the album’s sonic symbolism. The layers of initiation ORANSSI PAZUZU are discussing are present in their music. A resonant ritual of layers upon layers\, rhythms upon rhythms. If you pass through all the gates on Muuntautuja\, you find the center and that is a darkness that’s impossible to illuminate. \nFrom the depiction of the mayhem of war in the tracks ‘Voitelu’ or themes of mass manipulation in ‘Bioalkemisti’\, Muuntautuja’s concepts are colossal. The themes reach an almost mythical and religious element where Ontto explains: “In the more atmospheric tracks the subjects are introspective and mystical – Muuntautuja deals with the idea of death as a transformation into a different state of being\, and ‘Ikikäärme’ is a fantasy about pursuing immortality\, by becoming united with a god snake after being devoured by it.”\nDrawing inspiration from eclectic sources ranging from Boredoms\, Death Grips to Portishead’s Third album\, ORANSSI PAZUZU mold their psychedelic alchemy into a potent brew where a tripped out Godflesh creates an alien being with Nine Inch Nails (Downward Spiral era)\, Beherit and My Bloody Valentine. The result is that Muuntautuja is electronically charged\, both organic and inorganic in origin.\nGuitarist Ikon reflects:\n“Our experimentation with samplers and electronics made us step towards the weird concept of making nightmarish Rave music. We tried to find common ground between danceable rhythms and oppressive waves of noise and distortion.”\nMuuntautuja transcends genre\, embodying a transcendent experience that slimes listeners in its nightmare of space and metamorphosis. DESCRIPTION:Ben Folds is an Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter who has created an enormous body of genre-bending music that includes pop albums with Ben Folds Five\, multiple solo albums\, a holiday album\, and numerous collaborative records. \nHe currently tours as a pop artist\, while also performing for over two decades with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras. \nFolds\, who served for eight years as the first ever Artistic Advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, stepped down from his post when Donald Trump announced his takeover of the Center. On October 25 and 26\, 2024\, just days before the US presidential election\, Folds recorded two sold out performances with the NSO which he released as a live album in July which debuted at the top of the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts. \nA New York Times Best Selling author\, Ben also creates new music for film\, tv and theatre\, with original new music he composed to be featured in an animated Peanuts special airing this summer on Apple TV. \nIn 2022\, he launched a music education charitable initiative in his native state of North Carolina entitled “Keys For Kids\,” which provides funds and keyboards to existing nonprofits that offer free or affordable piano lessons to school-age children from economically-disadvantaged households.
