SUMMARY:Come And See (1985)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Elem Klimov – 1985 – 142m – Soviet Union – In Russian with English subtitles – Valid for Punch Cards \n\n\nAMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE’S BLEAK WEEK:  CINEMA OF DESPAIR  IS HERE!  AS ONE OF OVER A HUNDRED PARTICIPATING  MOVIE THEATERS AROUND THE WORLD\, WE’RE OFFERING UP THREE DOUBLE FEATURES  (WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES / COME & SEE\, IN A YEAR OF 13 MOONS / STROCZEK\, CHRISTIANE F. / AU HASARD BALTHAZAR) & A CLOSING  7 PLUS HOUR  BELA TAR MONUMENTAL FEATURE  SATANTANGO! \nNOTE:  THIS DOUBLE FEATURE WILL BE WITH BELA TARR &  ÁGNES HRANITSKY’S HUNGARIAN LANDMARK WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES! \nStaff member Jack Mahoney’s pick! \nThis widely acclaimed film from Soviet director Elem Klimov is a stunning\, senses-shattering plunge into the dehumanizing horrors of war. As Nazi forces encroach on his small village in present-day Belarus\, teenage Flyora (Aleksei Kravchenko\, in one of the screen’s most searing depictions of anguish since Renée Falconetti’s Joan of Arc) eagerly joins the Soviet resistance. Rather than the adventure and glory he envisioned\, what he finds is a waking nightmare of unimaginable carnage and cruelty—rendered with a feverish\, otherworldly intensity by Klimov’s subjective camerawork and expressionistic sound design. Nearly suppressed by Soviet censors who took eight years to approve its script\, Come and See is perhaps the most visceral\, impossible-to-forget antiwar film ever made. \n“This 1985 Soviet anti-war drama is one of the best movies ever made.” – Tom Cassidy\, Common Sense Media \n“A compelling\, harrowing\, absurdly beautiful account of the little known holocaust in Byelorussia.” – Victoria Mather\, Daily Telegraph (UK)

Adapted from a novel by the celebrated writer and frequent Tarr collaborator László Krasznahorkai\, Werckmeister Harmonies unfolds in an unknown era in an unnamed village\, where\, one day\, a mysterious circus—complete with an enormous stuffed whale and a shadowy\, demagogue-like figure known as the Prince—arrives and appears to awaken a kind of madness in the citizens\, which builds inexorably toward violence and destruction. In thirty-nine of his signature long takes\, engraved in ghostly black and white\, Tarr conjures an apocalyptic vision of dreamlike dread and fathomless beauty. \n“Mesmerizing\, haunting\, deeply moving.” – Diane Carson\, KDHX (St. Louis) \n“It is an arduous task\, but the film achieves a transcendent and ethereal beauty that only the few truly great masterpieces attain.” – Derek Smith\, Cinematic Reflections

Disease is rampant\, and local adoption is rare. 25 Cats from Qatar follows one mission – led by a network of multinational underground animal rescuers in Doha and a Milwaukee flight attendant/cat cafe owner – to transport out 25 lucky felines and find homes for them abroad\, all the while searching for a long-term solution to the crisis. \n“Succeeds not just as an advocacy piece but as a compelling\, fast-paced rescue adventure.” – Alan Ng\, Film Threat \n“Beyond the cats\, “25 Cats From Qatar” is a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people in the Middle East\, kind people with the same hopes and dreams as everybody else\, that feels timely and necessary right now.” – Rob Thomas\, Not That Rob Thomas (Substack)

SUMMARY:Hardboiled (1992)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. John Woo – 1998 – 126m – Hong Kong – In Catonese with English subtitles – Valid for Punch Cards \n\n\nNewly restored up on our screen as part of the 94 Rock Late Nighter Flicks series! \nViolence as poetry\, rendered by a master—brilliant and passionate\, John Woo’s Hard Boiled tells the story of jaded detective “Tequila” Yuen (played with controlled fury by Chow Yun-fat). Woo’s dizzying odyssey through the world of Hong Kong Triads\, undercover agents\, and frenzied police raids culminates unforgettably in the breathless hospital sequence. More than a cops-and-bad-guys story\, Hard Boiled continually startles with its originality and dark humor. \n“You find yourself laughing aloud — not derisively\, but in gratitude and appreciation because you can’t believe what you’re seeing.” – Sean Burns\, WBUR’s Arts & Culture \n“Woo has elevated the action movie into the realm of art. Infinitely more exciting than a dozen Die Hards\, action cinema doesn’t come any better than this.” – Mark Salisbury\, Empire Magazine \n“It’s astoundingly emotional and exhilarating\, thanks to the oversized passions Woo grants his characters and the formal brilliance of his filming\, with his rushing camera\, extreme long takes and magnificent choreography of movement.”- Dave Kehr\, New York Daily News

SUMMARY:The Spook Who Sat By The Door (1973)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Ivan Dixon – 1973 – 102m – Valid for Punch Cards \nIt’s on! Author of the the superb compendium Blaxploitation Cinema: The Essential Reference Guide Josiah Howard (who also curated all the chosen films for this midweek) will be in our cinema house to introduce & do a post screening discussion! Welcome to BLAXPLOITATION MIDWEEK! \nDOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE PRICE-OF-ONE\, SEE ONE OR BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE UNDER PLAYED 70’S GEM TOP OF THE HEAP (1972)! \nThe film follows Dan Freeman (played by Lawrence Cook)\, an African American man who becomes the first black CIA officer. His hiring is initially a token gesture to placate civil rights activists and project an image of inclusivity within the agency. However\, Freeman proves to be highly competent\, quickly mastering espionage techniques and tactics. Despite his skills\, he is relegated to a low-profile\, menial position\, symbolically seated by the door to serve as a token black employee. Growing increasingly disillusioned with the systemic racism and marginalization he experiences\, Freeman decides to use his training for a revolutionary cause. He resigns from the CIA and returns to his hometown of Chicago\, where he begins to recruit and train a militant group of young African Americans. Utilizing the guerrilla warfare techniques he learned at the CIA\, Freeman’s group\, disguised as a community organization\, aims to fight against racial oppression and challenge the status quo. As Freeman’s insurgency grows\, it attracts the attention of law enforcement and government officials\, leading to a tense and escalating conflict. The film explores themes of racial identity\, institutional racism\, and the complexities of resistance. “The Spook Who Sat By the Door” is a powerful and thought-provoking film that examines the potential for radical change and the lengths to which oppressed individuals might go to achieve liberation. It remains a significant work for its bold portrayal of racial and political issues\, and its critique of both governmental and societal structures. \n“One of the few uncompromised representations of black armed resistance in the United States.” – Cynthia Fuchs\, PopMatters \n“Possibly the most radical of the blaxploitation films of the 70s\, this movie was an overnight success when released in 1973\, then was abruptly taken out of distribution for reasons still not entirely clear.” – Jonathan Rosenbaum\, Chicago Reader.

SUMMARY:Top Of The Heap (1972)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Christopher St. John – 1972 – 90m – Valid for Punch Cards \nIt’s on! \nDOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE PRICE-OF-ONE\, SEE ONE OR BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE OUTSTANDING SINGULAR IVAN DIXON FEATURE THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR (1973)! \nA year after his supporting role in the blockbuster Shaft\, Christopher St. John wrote\, directed\, and starred in this kaleidoscopic fever dream of a Black cop’s crisis of sanity after being passed over for a promotion\, and the death of his mother. \nWith dreamlike imagery depicting St. John’s George Lattimer as a war hero\, astronaut\, and other representations of American idealism\, the film tackles the contradiction of a Black man who follows the ‘rules’ in a position of power\, only to find himself trapped in the same impossible position he was in before joining the police. Top of the Heap is an underrated twist on Blaxploitation cinema\, and an essential piece of American independent film\, free of studio interference and muddled messaging. \n“As written\, the film is punctuated by escapist visions in which Lattimer pictures himself a revered astronaut in a lacquered 2001-esque space station\, but outer space isn’t far enough to elude the earthly news of his mother’s death; the only approaching celestial “voyage” on his itinerary is to her funeral in rural Alabama. In this dark substitution\, the film reckons not only with systemic prejudice but the cosmic menace of aging and death—or rather\, demonstrates Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s definition of racism as “the state-sanctioned or extralegal production and exploitation of group-differentiated vulnerability to premature death.”’ ~ Veronica Fitzpatrick\, Screen Slate

SUMMARY:The Cost Of Creating
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Mark Archuleta – 2026 – 20m – Not Valid for Punch Cards \n\n\nThe Cost of Creating is a documentary exploring the sacrifices\, struggles\, and personal realities behind the work of artists.  While the public often sees the finished piece—the painting\, the performance\, the music\, the exhibition—this film looks at the hidden side of that process: the time\, risk\, emotional investment\, and uncertainty that artists carry in order to create. Through intimate interviews and cinematic portraits of New Mexico artists\, the film asks a central question: what does it actually cost to devote your life to creating \nFeaturing artists from across the Albuquerque creative community\, the documentary explores themes of dedication\, identity\, financial reality\, family balance\, and the internal drive that pushes artists to continue creating despite the challenges. Following the screening\, there will be a short conversation with the filmmaker and participating artists about the realities of sustaining a creative life. This event offers a rare look behind the curtain of artistic practice and celebrates the resilience and passion of the local creative community. \nMark Archuleta is an Albuquerque-based filmmaker and the founder of Marchuleta Productions. His work focuses on documenting artists\, creators\, and the cultural landscape of New Mexico through intimate and cinematic storytelling. He is the creator of the documentary series Meet the Artist\, which explores the lives and creative practices of artists across the state. His films emphasize the process of creation and the personal stories behind artistic work. The Cost of Creating continues that exploration by examining the sacrifices artists make in order to pursue their craft. \nABOUT MARCHULETA PRODUCTIONS \nIndependent film production focused on documentary storytelling about artists\, culture\, and creative life in New Mexico.
