SUMMARY:By Design
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Amanda Kramer – 2025 – 91m \n\n\nUpon seeing a gorgeous chair in a showroom\, Camille (Juliette Lewis) realizes that she truly envies the life of this perfect piece of furniture. If only she could be someone’s favorite thing. When she and the chair swap forms\, Camille learns that she is better liked as an inanimate object than she was as a person: her mother (Betty Buckley) finds her to be a better listener\, and her best friends (Samantha Mathis and Robin Tunney) enjoy a newfound\, friction-free rapport. As the chair\, Camille is unable to speak or move and winds up in the hands of Olivier (Mamoudou Athie)\, a minimalist bachelor who gradually becomes romantically fixated on his elegant new possession. \nNarrated by Melanie Griffith\, this modern fable celebrates the messiness of female interiority with deadpan humor\, surrealist flourishes\, and interpretative dance numbers. An absurdist spin on the body-swap comedy\, By Design is a bold new work from singular filmmaker Amanda Kramer. \n“Kramer remains a master of her craft\, capable of dreaming up realities that exist unto themselves and bringing along a cast who surrender themselves to her artistry.” – Manuel Betancourt\, Variety \n“If you want to know the true meaning of love\, find someone that looks at you the way Mamoudou Athie looks at a chair in Amanda Kramer’s surreal\, stylish and militantly absurd comedy-drama By Design.” – Damon Wise\, Deadline \n“A gorgeous film\, with stylized interiors and attractive people in stylish\, colorful clothes.” – Jourdain Searles\, The Hollywood Reporter \n“Juliette Lewis and Mamoudou Athie Are a Joy in This Bold Body Swap Comedy … It’s not just Kramer’s funniest film yet\, but also her best.” – Chase Hutchinson\, The Wrap \n“Kramer’s film only gets weirder and weirder … The best “person becomes a chair” film since Suzume.” -Jacob Oller\, The AV Club

SUMMARY:Nika & Madison
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Eva Thomas – 2025 – 87m \n\n\nAn AIO-NM (Americans for Indian Opportunity)\, INDIGENOUS CINEMA SCREENINGS\, and NATIVEZINE Productions special!  BONUS: actor Gary Farmer in person to introduce the film! \nWinner Santa Fe International Film Festival Award Best Narrative Feature Film – In this tense and emotionally charged story\, two childhood friends find themselves testing their resilience and loyalty in an ultimate fight for justice. Madison\, a University of Toronto student\, is sharp and career focused while Nika prefers the solitude and simplicity of life on the reservation. During a weekend back home\, Nika rescues Madison from a sexual assault by a policeman\, but the violent encounter leaves the officer critically injured. Fearing they won’t be believed\, the Indigenous women go on the run; first seeking refuge on the reserve and then deep into the wilderness\, until they’re chased back to the city. Two sharp-eyed detectives begin to uncover the truth\, but when the case involves one of their own\, the justice system reveals its deeply ingrained biases\, blurring the lines between right and wrong. \n“Shows how terrifying the colonial justice system is\, even at the best of times. Part procedural and part hangout movie\, “Nika & Madison” is a showcase for Indigenous talent on screen and behind the camera.” — Alex Heeney\, Seventh Row

SUMMARY:After Hours (1985)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Martin Scorsese – 1985 – 97m \n\n\nDesperate to escape his mind-numbing routine\, uptown Manhattan office worker Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) ventures downtown for a hookup with a mystery woman (Rosanna Arquette). So begins the wildest night of his life\, as bizarre occurrences—involving underground-art punks\, a distressed waitress\, a crazed Mister Softee truck driver\, and a bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweight—pile up with anxiety-inducing relentlessness and thwart his attempts to get home. With this Kafkaesque cult classic\, Martin Scorsese—abetted by Michael Ballhaus’s kinetic cinematography and scene-stealing supporting turns by Linda Fiorentino\, Teri Garr\, Catherine O’Hara\, and John Heard—directed a darkly comic tale of mistaken identity\, turning the desolate night world of 1980s SoHo into a bohemian wonderland of surreal menace. \n“I have spent 40 years in swoony thrall to this movie. I tremble every single time I watch it. After Hours is an object lesson in sonder.” – Walter Chaw\, Film Freak Central \n“Dazzling movie making; you could get a giddy kick just from cinematographer Michael Ballhaus’ shot as a set of house keys floats down toward the camera\, tossed from a top-floor apartment.” – Sheila Benson. SUMMARY:Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel (1979)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Grigori Kromanov – 1979 – 84m – Russia – In Russian with English subtitles \n\n\nDOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE-PRICE-OF-ONE\, SEE ONE OR  BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE 1981 CROATIAN ODDBALL “VISITORS FROM THE ARKANA GALAXY”!  THANK YOU DEAF CROCODILE! \nFrom the writers of Tarkovsky’s STALKER\, is a cozy paranoid mystery that feels like Agatha Christie hijacked by New Romantics.  It lives in the same synth-laden Euro glam sci-fi universe as THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH and Fassbinder’s WORLD ON A WIRE!  The police get a call-out to a lonely hotel in the Alps. When an officer gets to the hotel everything seems to be alright. Suddenly\, an avalanche cuts them off from the rest of the world and strange things start happening. \n“Resists the ordinary in favor of the idiosyncratic and renegade.” – Joshua Polanski\, There Were No Gods Left

SUMMARY:Visitors From The Arkana Galaxy (1981)
DESCRIPTION:Dir. Dusan Vukotic – 1981 – 89m – Croatia – In Croatian with English subtitles \n\n\nDOUBLE FEATURED (2-MOVIES-FOR-THE-PRICE-OF-ONE\, SEE ONE OR  BOTH FOR THE SAME PRICE!) WITH THE 1979 RUSSIAN RENEGADE BIZARRO “DEAD MOUNTAINEER’S HOTEL”!  THANK YOU DEAF CROCODILE! \nImagine if Troma Films had been hired to make a Sid & Marty Krofft Saturday morning kids’ show\, and you have some idea of the unspeakable strangeness of VISITORS FROM THE ARKANA GALAXY\, a truly gonzo Croatian sci-fi / fantasy about a struggling writer\, Robert (Zarko Potocnjak)\, who dreams up a story of gold-skinned alien androids named Andra\, Targo and Ulu from a distant planet. Incredibly\, his fictional alien creations become reality\, causing chaos in his relationship with his girlfriend Biba (Lucie Zulová) and threatening his small seaside village. The alluring lead robot Andra (Ksenia Prohaska) looks like H.R. Giger re-designed the Maschinenmensch from Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS; watch for the scene where she pours hot coffee and cream out of her fingertips. But for sheer jawdropping insanity\, nothing rivals the Mumu Monster — created for the film by legendary Czech animator Jan Švankmajer –\, a rubber-suited\, multi-tentacled creation that destroys a wedding party\, ripping off heads and spouting plumes of toxic green smoke while a blind accordion player blithely plays his squeezebox. \nVISITORS was a rare live-action feature from animator Dusan Vukotic (1927-1998)\, best known for his stunning UPA-style cartoon shorts including “Cow On The Moon” (1959) and the Oscar-winning “The Substitute” (1961). This long-unavailable genre treat has been newly restored in 4K by Deaf Crocodile and Zagreb Film in Croatia\, along with five of Vukotic’s classic animated shorts!
